(SALEM, Ore.) - The City of Salem has awarded to Dalke Construction Company, Inc., a contract in the amount of $7,807,000 for the construction of new Fire Station Nos. 5, 7, 10, and 11. In 2006, the residents of Salem passed a $24.72 million Fire General Obligation Bond that provided funding for fleet replacement, station construction, and station upgrades. Two new stations, one at State Street and I-5 and a second on Orchard Heights Road NW, are to be constructed. Two existing stations, Station No. 5 on Glenn Creek Road NW and Station No. 7 on Liberty Road S, are planned to be replaced with new stations. "This is great news for the citizens of Salem as well as for Salem Fire," said Salem Fire Chief Greg Keller, "A huge community involvement effort helped identify the best locations for these stations. Seventy-three percent of Salem's citizens approved the bond. Now we have a local company to do the construction at such a good price. I could not be more pleased." All four stations were designed using the same floor plan for efficiency by Group Mackenzie Architecture of Portland. Each station is 10,500 square feet and will be able to accommodate up to eight fire apparatus and two full crews. One unique feature of these stations is that they are being equipped with an emergency generator that will be able to run the station under full load for up to 72 hours. This will allow the stations to better serve the community after a major disaster when there could be prolonged power outages. Groundbreaking at Station No. 5 should take place in late March 2008.
