(PORTLAND, Ore.) - A warm frontal system gave the Portland metropolitan area a mix of snow and rain this morning and afternoon. Snow and rain showers may continue on and off through the rest of the day. Accumulations of snow are expected to be light, with more accumulations in the higher elevations. Once the snows end, travelers are advised of the potential for black ice tonight and tomorrow morning. Drive slowly, be careful on steep hills and shady spots, keep your headlights on, and watch for bicyclists and pedestrians. City crews will continue to monitor conditions through the night, apply sand and de-icing chemical to icy spots in the hills, and apply anti-icing chemical on known hazard areas if the streets dry out enough. Road Conditions and Advisories Low elevation roads are currently wet and in good shape. Some of the higher roads have light accumulations of snow and are icy in spots. Although most road surfaces are expected to dry out, any wet roads in the region may freeze up tonight making black ice a potential. Black ice is treacherous because it is almost invisible to the naked eye. It is ice that remains on roadways that do not get direct sunlight. Motorists and bicyclists are advised to be especially careful on bridges, overpasses, infrequently traveled roads, and shady spots because these areas will freeze first. Pedestrians are advised to be cautious crossing streets. Travelers are advised to know before you go! Check TripCheck.com for highway road conditions.
