U.S. Transfers Humvees, Weapons to Afghan National Army

Many soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan are against handing Humvees over to the Afghan National Army. Their maintenance is intensive and they are difficult to drive on Afghanistan's roads.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - The United States transferred 213 Humvees and more than 12,000 light weapons to the Afghan National Army during a ceremony Feb. 2nd at a depot in Pol-e-charkhi, Afghanistan.

American soldiers on the ground are critical of the move, saying the Humvees our own troops drive are often worn out. The armored doors weigh heavily on the structure of hte actual vehicle. Armored Humvees weigh just less than 12,000 pounds.

But national leaders do not seem to be listening. The transfer marks the beginning of delivery of more than 800 various up-armored vehicles for the ANA, according to Afghan President Hamid Karzai said.

"This is only the tip of the mountain of deliveries ... you will see many things the U.S. is committed to give Afghanistan in order to support the defense force," Karzai said. "We appreciate both current and future donations."

Afghan Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak said the vehicles and weapons will help the ANA gain the capability to conduct independent operations.

"This dramatically increases ANA mobility, assault and survivability," Wardak said. "By Allah's aid, and the backing of the Afghan people, these vehicles and weapons will help us defend the country and challenge all threats in the most hazardous area of the Asian continent."

Karzai praised his nation's army and expressed gratitude to the United States.

"Today we are very happy and proud of our national army," he said. "We appreciate its minister, chief of general staff, officers and, mostly, its noncommissioned officers and soldiers. This country will be forever in their debt.

"Let's take care of these vehicles and weapons bought with millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars," Karzai continued. "We should be grateful for the delivery of this equipment and use them in the correct way."

It's good to see US aid for the ANA knowing that ANA soldiers in soft Ford Ranger Pickups are often blown to smitherens. But with the $10.6bn pledged, why is it that only $2bn is cast aside for reconstruction. I mean how is $2bn for reconstruction going to make up for the potentially $8.6bn worth of destruction??

and the man said "it wasn't a religious war" in earlier "Man of God" dispatch. Must've got it wrong.,and personally I think we ought to tighten the circle back where we belong and stay off other peoples ridgelines.,they don't want us there for a little while.,they want us there forever., and China is opening numerous diplomatic-buisness channels with a new wave of suppliers from Cuba to Sudan.,not dropping bombs.,and securing this resource if what I read is true. What are we doing arming an Islamic faction with lethal weapons for anyway? as if there aren't enough there already? Makes me want to believe in a higher power too, just seeing conditions of their lives, but not another "Army of God".,read Smedley Butler's "War Is A Racket" and tell me it ain't true. We are gettin' used again or I'm blinded by my own delusions.

hasn't this happened before?.,I mean if this government collapses in on itself who's fault is it? The U.S. gave the Vietnamese government in Saigon their artillery and air strike support for over two years from the time U.S. combat units were pulled out till the embassy being overrun in 75'. As of today in Afghanistan over two hundred seventy U.S. personel have been killed there so far.,and Karzai still needs a Humvee to leave his home in Kabul five years later! What's goin' on Mr. President?

by Allah's aid?., so the Taliban just got a new shipment of weapons and the A.N.A. a shipment of vehicles they can't maintain., and can be heard approaching from ten kilometers away.,Mr. Karzai.,I'm sceptical., and it looks like you are too. Your own position can't be won with overwhelmig arms anymore now than it has been since it started. I think the U.S. Med-Cap visits and clinics are better for America and Afghanistan. The trucks will be placed side by side with those Russian tanks but the people will remember a pair of glasses or a Doctors attention in a clinic more than another pile of weapons grade steel.
