(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon legislators have targeted the sale of "dangerous and deceptive" novelty and toylike lighters with a bill that will prohibit the items in the state. The Oregon Fire Safety Coalition, fire safety officials and children's advocacy groups from across the state have been working on passing this "critical legislation" to reduce unintentional misuse of these devices. The results of accidents can be serious as the lighters potentially threaten children and their families with burn injury, death and property loss. Democratic Representatives Greg Matthews, Paul Holvey, and Tina Kotek along with State Fire Marshal Randy Simpson, will hold a press conference Wednesday at noon at the capitol Press Room on the House passage of HB 2365. House Democrats say they made the banning of dangerous toys, including toylike lighters, part of their 2009 Roadmap for Oregon's Future. Despite the fact that the photo was of the man holding an obvious cap gun, police demanded to enter Ryan Lever’s property in search of the item, which isn’t even illegal. “I had the police show up telling me i had a picture posted on facebook holding a gun! I informed them it was obviously not a real gun they did not care! They proceeded to search my house looking for this toy gun!,” complained Lever....cont'd.
