Dec-31-2013 12:38TweetFollow @OregonNews Happy New Year, Mr. President, and Help SL Tamils with Two Important Things in 2014, Says Tamils For ObamaSalem-News.comTamils for Obama wishes the president a good 2014 and asks him to get behind an international investigation into war crimes committed by Sri Lankan officials during and since the ethnic war, and to help the Tamil victims in northeastern Sri Lanka to determine their own destiny.
(NEW YORK) - In a letter sent to President Obama recently, Tamils for Obama wished the president a happy 2014 and asked him to help the SL Tamils in two significant matters. "We told the president there are two things the Tamils in Sri Lanka need from him in 2014," said the press spokesman for Tamils for Obama. "The first one is that he get the US to push for 'an international investigation into war crimes committed by Sri Lankan officials during and since the ethnic war.' The second item was, as we said in our letter, ' You acted rightfully and courageously in helping the victims in South Sudan to determine their own destiny. The same thing must be done for Tamil victims in northeast Sri Lanka, and we hope you will get it done.'" The letter began with some cheerful things that Tamils for Obama sees coming for the president. These were:
The letter continued "Now let us remind you of the more than 70,000 Tamils killed in the last days of the ethnic war in Sri Lanka, the 90, 000 widows in desperate circumstances there now, and so many orphans." The letter then named the two things Tamils for Obama wished for in 2014 for the SL Tamils. Those were US support for the international investigation into GOSL war crimes, and asking the SL Tamils what they want in their future. The letter said: The US should put its weight behind an international investigation into war crimes committed by Sri Lankan officials during and since the ethnic war. We know that the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) was a delaying action and a whitewash, as all of Sri Lanka's actions since 1948 have been. No Singhalese has ever been held accountable for any outrage against Tamils. Justice and Truth are overdue, and we expect that 2014 is the year in which Tamils should get them. You acted rightfully and courageously in helping the victims in South Sudan to determine their own destiny. The same thing must be done for Tamil victims in the northeast of Sri Lanka, and we hope you will get it done. The letter concluded "We wish a good 2014 for you, your family, and the US. The two items listed above are what we wish for on behalf of Tamils in Sri Lanka, and we hope you will take care of these two items in 2014." Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. They believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan ethnic war. They have also watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Singhalese victors after the war, and strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.
