Multnomah Sheriff Asks Residents to Stay Off Roads

If you are stuck at the side of the road and decide to keep your car running and lights on, make sure your tail pipe is clear of snow so as to vent engine exhaust to the outside.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Extremely hazardous roads are reported in Multnomah County at this time. The Multnomah Sheriff's Office asks everyone not engaged in essential services to stay off the roads, especially I-84 east of I-5, which was officially closed by ODOT from Troutdale to Hood River.

The MCSO patrol sergeant reports multiple personal and commercial vehicles stuck in snow drifts in the lanes of traffic and commercial vehicles blocking on-ramps in multiple areas.

They say it is extremely dangerous to be on the roads at this time. Anyone having to pull off the freeway onto parking areas, such as Multnomah Fall lodge parking lots, should call friends or relatives and let them know where you are.

If you are stuck at the side of the road and decide to keep your car running and lights on, make sure your tail pipe is clear of snow so as to vent engine exhaust to the outside.

Also, please, unless you have an emergency, use the police non-emergency number, 503-823-3333 to report your position and condition, so as not to tie up the 911 lines.

We've got a foot and upwards (long ways upwards) over here on the east side of the state, but we're kinda used to such things. You guys on the west side haven't the means to deal with it, nor are your drivers used to it... Be careful, everyone. Please don't make this Christmas a tragic one for you, or anyone else... The Blue Mountains have gathered snow so fast that measurements are out of date as soon as they're recorded. And the zero (and below) temperatures on up to around 20-25 have kept the snow light and fluffy and it blows and drifts wildly...
