Time for a BC Pesticide Ban

BCers want a ban that does not affect public health protection or the forestry and agriculture industries.

(KAMLOOPS, B.C.) - Many today are involved in the effort to see a BC cosmetic pesticide ban on the sale and use of unnecessary toxic products that are used on lawns, playgrounds, sport fields, golf courses and gardens. I am a Kamloops Mom who wants all BCers, our pets and the environment to be protected from harmful pesticide exposure.

The Campbell Government did nothing after last year’s on-line public consultation, even though 88% of respondents wanted a ban!

Seven provinces have banned cosmetic pesticides approved by Health Canada as many safer, less toxic products exist. It is time for BC to catch up!

We have until Friday Dec 16th to tell the bi-partisan Special Legislative Committee on Cosmetic Pesticides that:

We want a ban on the sale and use of cosmetic pesticides (BC should have the best protection legislation in Canada. Premier Clark and Environment Minister Lake have done this already for sled dogs).

We want a ban that does not allow continued use by professional landscapers or trained applicators (The powerful horticultural/turf industry led by CropLife is lobbying for this type of “ban”).

BCers want a ban that does not affect public health protection or the forestry and agriculture industries. (Cosmetic use is about turf and gardens, not bed bugs, pine beetle or farmers’ fields).

This is a busy time of year but please make time before Friday Dec 16th to complete the on-line questionnaire and tell the Legislative Committee you want a ban by clicking here. (Took me less than 5 minutes yesterday).

You can also do a personal written or video submission by clicking here

Please share this email with your family, friends and colleagues before next Friday.

For those who have sent in their comments – thanks! We all need to let the Clark Government know we want BC to be pesticide free.

Thanks for caring, Judy Wigmore Pesticide Free BC webmaster

Together, let’s make BC pesticide free!
