(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University vice president for research John Cassady was arrested last month on drunken driving and assault charges after crashing his car into two of his neighbors' garages.

The 68-year-old was booked at the Benton County jail and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and fourth-degree assault stemming from the Nov. 18th incident.

According to Corvallis police Cassady was driving with his wife, Nancy, and crashed his 2003 Oldsmobile into two garages near the couples home on Southwest Fairhaven Court.

Police said that Cassady had a breath alcohol content of 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

Two vehicles in neighbors’ garages were damaged in the incident. The criminal mischief charge was related to those damages as well as to the damage to Cassady’s own car.

Police say the assault charge resulted from the fact that his wife sustained cuts on her face and hand that required stitches.

Cassady’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 11th.

Cassady joined OSU as Vice President for Research in March 2005.

Cassady earned the PhD in Organic Chemistry at Case-Western Reserve University.

He was formerly Dean and Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, College of Pharmacy, Ohio State University, and before that Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy at Purdue University.

As a long time Corvallis resident, I can tell you this guy is a crook, a drunk and a hazard. So much of his criminal behavior is covered up by his university buddies. It is a crime and a shame. Send this loser back to Ohio along with Ed Ray. They are thieves, liars and will do ANYTHING to protect their privileged positions.

What intoxicants was Cassidy intoxicated on? They say intoxicants, then say a 0.18 from alchohol...which is'nt much because I once blew a .2 from after drinking 2 beers....so drinking any alcohol and driving should be treated as premeditated murder..sounds like Cassidy might need Dr. Bob and the Good Old Timers.

No-J et al: Had MSgt. in Army named "Honest John" Stacey; you sat in on his Friday-poker table o else. But he was great leader, and tried to teach us precisely what you now state -perhaps because he was in his own 60's. Appreciate jogging memory, for what he told us --NOT poker results !!

Does this mean that all of the good that he did in his life means NOTHING! I do not think so! Remember, it is a long life and I wish him the best. If his wife is presses assault charges, something else is going on. We do not know if this is a fact. She may not press charges.

Do you know how much harder life can be at 68 under most circumstances especially for someone of his generation? Younger people should have more empathy for older people. The rate of alchoholism for people as they get older is extremely high. It is easy to judge a person when you never were a drinker or are living in a young relatively new body. Wait till you see how hard it is to get older....especially when today there is no respect for older people. This is another disgusting part of American culture. Older people are a treasure, even when they have a drinking problem. I would not doubt if he is not suicidal now. Does anyone care about that?

Sounds like he may be learning too much from his students...

This guy is a real role model for our university students. "Distinguished Professor" certainly doesn't sound like an apt description. He doesn't even have the good sense not to drive when he's intoxicated. And not just intoxicated, he was HAMMERED.
