Aug-30-2006 10:49TweetFollow @OregonNews Peaceful Defenders Louder Than Unwelcome Hate Group (VIDEO)Tim King Salem-News.comHood River came out to support the family of a war hero and to make sure the hate group stayed in line.
(HOOD RIVER) - Hood River may not always be the quietest place in Oregon. It is a popular recreational area with plenty of boats on the water, and it is the place where Navy SEAL Marc Lee grew up. It’s also the place where Marc's Memorial was held Saturday, following his recent death in Iraq. But a different kind of noise was in the air, it’s the last noise these people who came to say goodbye to a hero, wanted to hear. A hate group from Kansas that disrupts military funerals drug American flags on the ground, carried anti-American and anti-gay signs, and did their best to harass people. None of the veteran’s whose funerals they picket were selected because they were gay. Margie Phelps is the ringleader of the hate group from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. People say there isn’t much they don’t hate, but they focus on being anti-gay. They claim that American military personnel are only dying in the wars overseas because America condones homosexuality.
Yes, the same nation that soundly defeated a recent gay marriage proposal. The morning started peacefully, and at first it looked like the Westboro Baptist Church from Topeka, Kansas might be a no show. That’s what happened the last time they threatened to attend a funeral in Oregon, when Madras, Oregon laid Pf. Thomas Tucker, an Army Airborne Ranger, to rest. But this event was prepared for the possible arrival of the dreaded right wing protestors from Kansas did arrive, a motorcycle group called the Patriot Guard showed up They had their work cut out for them, and they had help from the locals. Then the alarm was sounded for uninvited guests. MJ Kesterson is the mom of Blackhawk helicopter pilot Erik Kesterson who was killed in Mosul, Iraq in 2003. She said it was outrageous that anyone would fail to see the sacrifice her son and Marc Lee had made, “They wore those uniforms with pride. I’m extremely proud of my son for serving his country.” And there, waiting to yell her beliefs in the face of everyone was Margie Phelps. As she began singing a mockery of the Navy song, veterans raised the noise level on her. It was something about RPG’s and IOD’s and “die, die die die” sung to Anchors Away. The veterans surrounded the woman ahd held their flags high as they grimaced over the sounds she produced, as offensive and indecent as anything a person could imagine. It sounded like two groups and first and plenty of people, but only about five members of the Westboro Church showed up. The word is that the group is running low on money, they’re traveling less Scowling and yelling insults at the veterans, the Westboro Baptist Church members from Kansas showed their colors and many people said the outward hatred they profess seems contrary to anything like Christianity. Confrontational right down to the last word, Margie Phelps hurled more insults than a bully on an elementary school playground. Any chance of making a sound point was lost as the irrational blabber droned on. As Phelps continued pelting the veterans with insults, she also made a victim of an active duty Army soldier in uniform, “Hey, there’s an Army soldier, rape anybody lately?” My longer than average hair earned the title of “ma’am” when she spoke to me. She called the veterans crybabies and said it was America’s fault that God was killing the servicemen. The video has much of her dialogue and that amounts to a collection of the most whacked out fundamentalist religious values that I’ve ever heard anyone try to lay down. A plan was in place to drown the hate protestors out as the family and official party arrived. Motors revved and even the bagpiper came through to drown out the words of this Midwest hate group. The family arrived and saw little to nothing of Phelps and her band of women with hate signs. They went on to bury Marc Lee without interruption from the unwanted group that was allowed to protest at a distance from where the actual service was held. For many, the protestors are simply baffling. Phelps and her followers come in the wake of the Westboro Church reverend Fred Phelps. Word is he won’t go out in public because it’s too dangerous, imagine that? While they say they like to be in the news, they only show their harsh hateful side and it seems important to expose this small, extreme right wing fundamental religious extremist group for what it is, anything but religious. The harsh noise of this hate group was drowned out by music from a bagpipe intended to honor the dead, and their efforts accomplished nothing in the way of diminishing the purpose of the day. =========================================================== This story was originally published on Salem-News.com August 27th, 2006 at 10:49 AM WATCH THE VIDEO NEWS REPORT BELOW BY SALEM-NEWS.COM'S TIM KING (Sorry the video is missing, the company we used to post it went out of business, we will try to replace the clip if possible, if you have a copy of the original that you downloaded then please let us know, thank you.) I wonder if the Phelps crew ever think about which side of the Pearly gates they will end up on....

Grizz-ICVMC may want to be a bit more specific about the scriptural beliefs involved. A study of the bible in the literal sense has been a real eye opener for me. I do have a great empathy for the kids that governments conscript to go out and do their killing for them; but government objectives are more suspect now than at any other time in history, and we can't mix up our natural feelings for the fallen and the corrupt politicians that are responsible. It is possible to support our boys because they have little choice, and not support the ones who send them.

Regardless of what Margie says. I knew Marc personally and he was a born-again-christian who's heart was commited to Jesus Christ. He will be there to greet me when I get to heaven! Acts 16:31!

As a former Marine I am appaled at these protests at funerals of our fallen servicemen and women. As a PGR member I pledge that I will do everything in my power NOT to let anyone or group do anything to dishonor anyone who has died defending our nation (within the law of course). As a Christian I have to ask myself if these folks REALLY know God and Jesus. In my humble opinion they couldn't possibably. I was taught that God is ALL forgiving! I also believe that Jesus would be out on his bike with the PGR drowning out what these folks are saying and protecting the families from them. I would also like to take this oppertunity to thank all the servicemen and women that are currently serving in our military, the families that have lost a loved one to all conflicts this country has had or will have, and to the PGR for all it's selfless work against protecting these families in their time of their greatest loss. Where else in the world would people ride their motorcycles, in any kind of weather, hundreds of miles to honor someone they didn't know? I would also like to say "your welcome" to the folks of the WBC. Your welcome because I seriously doubt that you would say "Thank You" to any Veteran, present or past that has fought (and died) to GIVE you the right to protest at of our funerals. There is an old saying that goes something like this, "For those who fought for it FREEDOM has a flavor that the protected will never know." The folks of the WBC are the protected. P.S. As I write this, my lovely wife has a son who is home for 2 weeks on leave from Iraq. He already has served almost a year there and will return there after his leave is over. I am as proud of him as I would be of my own son. Even if he in the Army and isn't a Marine!

As a believer and follower in my nLord and Savior Jesus Christ, I am appaled at the Westboro Church claiming they are doing anything for Jesus by spewing hatred. I am a veteran, a PGR rider, and a Christian. These "people" from Westboro don't represent anything other than the Enemy who seeks to divide us. Let us glorify God by trustin Him to punish them. May God less America and all good people who fight evil in the world!!!
Bama Reb September 2, 2006 11:19 am (Pacific time)
I was one of the Soldiers there at the first barracade. Grizz and The Patriot Guard Riders did a great job shielding the family from the protesters.

Like too many who call themselves "Christians," there is nothing "Christ-like" about this bunch. Indeed, they are profoundly disturbed individuals. A collection of hate-filled bible-beating-bunko artists, bigots and ignoramuses, they are to the teachings of Jesus what Josef Mengele was to the practice of medicine.

1 Timothy 3: 15 …if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. (NIV) A school coach in our town is being vilified because he told one of his students to “just read your Bible.” Church people are up in arms, claiming ‘religious discrimination.’ Infuriated pastors are ready to march on the school. A pastor and other church members in the Mid-West go to a homosexual’s funeral with placards, condemning the deceased to Hell and make loud protests during the graveside service. Ministers preach from their pulpits about the sinfulness of our public education system and demonize the teachers, appealing to their members to send their kids to church schools. Meanwhile thousands of people are killed in Darfur, Sudan for their faith. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of kids in the United States go to bed hungry each night. Meanwhile millions of people around the globe die of curable diseases. In other words, the Church is becoming isolated and alienated from the real world due to arrogance, elitism, and pettiness. The world is on fire, folks, and we are peeing in the roses. I just wonder what Paul would think about all of this? When he wrote to Timothy about people knowing how to conduct themselves in God’s household, did he really mean us? When he called us the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth, was he really referring to us hyper-sensitive Christians who are ready to cry “Discrimination!” when things don’t go our way? It’s about time we grew up spiritually, and started to take our mission in the world seriously. Instead of being whining Christians, we should be winning souls. Instead of moaning about our rights, we should bring meaning into the world. Instead of compacting conspiracies about being mistreated, we should be conveying compassion to the maltreated. We have a great message, a great hope, and a great mission, which have the potential to reform, transform and enhance the world. So, let’s not focus on our petty grievances, folks. Both Christ and the world deserve far more than that. Let’s turn the other cheek, instead of trying to stick the boot in. Let’s win our enemies, instead of whining at them.
Steve August 30, 2006 9:08 am (Pacific time)
The Baptist Church and all it's members everywhere, supporting these protestors should be ashamed at the actions. If I was Baptist, I certainly would be ashamed at what is being done. Question? There must be at least one member of that Kansas Church in the military. What are these people going to do if he/she is killed? Protest their own church members, family, friends?
Steve-Albany August 30, 2006 9:00 am (Pacific time)
These low-life scum bags who protest in the face of people's terrible loss should all be rounded up and sent to Iraq or Afghanistan to protest the funerals there. Maybe we should look up information about the protestors and protest when one of their family dies and is being buried. I wonder how they would feel then. There is nothing lower than disrespecting those who have died, no matter the cause.

Sara Nichols, I am so sorry about your loss, I was a Marine too. We will keep the fire lit for all who have fallen, it isn't a matter of politics anymore. I am planning to go to Afghanistan soon and I will be able to tell the stories of Oregon soldiers from the front lines. Take care, and all of you who said thanks to us are ever so welcome. Tim King

Thank You, people like that make your stomach turn. I didn't join the military to fight for their freedom. I joined for my son and family, and everyone one who really understands the world and Gods way. God Bless those evil people....
Sara Nichols August 29, 2006 7:55 pm (Pacific time)
From the family of a fallen Marine we would like to personally thank the Patriot Guard Riders. There is nothing like walking past all the Heros that have served this country holding flags and saluting with bag pipes playing. Thank you Tim and the Salem News.com for your coverage on this story....~ Sara ~

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL OF HER SAILORS SOLDIERS AIRMEN AND MARINES!!!!!!!!!!! God is not hate nor does he hate our military that he has put together. This Kansas hate group will answer to MY GOD and hers also for what they are doing. Tue Christians do not do what this group is doing nor do we or I condone it.

These guys are as far to the right as anyone in history. So you can talk about things as you wish Matt, but around these parts we don’t screw around with the truth and we appreciate if you try your best to do the same. There was nothing conservative about starting a war in Iraq, get used to it, and homophobes are the same everywhere, they just bring out their spite toward the gay population in different ways and this happens to be the worst.
Marjorie Ehry, Dundee, OR August 29, 2006 9:28 am (Pacific time)
Growing up my mother told me many times, "we are so blessed to be born in this country." She was so right! It makes no difference what our polical party is, or our religion and we certainly all have our own opinions but when it comes to our country we stand tall, united behind our men and women in uniform and the freedom which are ao freely given. Thank you Tim, for your work and all the wonderful strong Americans who came out in support of this family and and our Nation. The little people full of hate only are pitied while they execrise their freedoms, what a waist! God teaches love not hate...what does that say for them?
Matt August 29, 2006 7:27 am (Pacific time)
This group is, obviously, a collection of disgusting pieces of human trash. To say they are right-wingers, though, is unfair. In fact, the head of WBC, Fred Phelps, ran as a Democrat for governor of Kansas, and they have supported Al Gore's presidential bid in the place. Don't you dare lump these wastes of oxygen in with us real conservatives.

I am a proud member of the Patriot Guard Riders, and am also a Navy veteran. This latest display of the Phelps group from Kansas only reafirms my comittment to stand proud with my PGR brothers and sisters. To all you wonderful guys and gals of the PGR, HOORAH !!
Mike Q, Son Of A PGR Rider! August 28, 2006 7:09 pm (Pacific time)
I'm only 17 and I think what those people from Kansas are doing is wrong. Granted they have a right to state their opinions, but its just wrong that they go to a funeral and do it. I think they cant understand that most people that serve in the military, do it because they believe in this country and want to protect it from "Bad Things". I think they should also be reminded that if our military wasn't or didn't do what there doing now, they wouldn't be able to state their opinion. I also think that what the PGR riders are doing is brilliant, my dad is a PGR rider and I'm proud of him. You other PGR riders, KEEP IT UP!
sonja forster August 28, 2006 2:43 pm (Pacific time)
I would just like to say that I am completely REPULSED, by the actions of that uninformed, uneducated ,religious finatic. And I am proud of the Patriot Guard Riders and what they do for the grieving families of these soldiers. Keep up the beautiful heartfelt work.

Why is this video unsponsored? Who is paying for this tribute to take place? It looks llike the answer is nobody based on that tag at the front of this highly moving story. Salem should feel bad if this site and these stories are having to be done free gratis by the reporters. I've never scene anything like it in this day and age. Bad form Salem!

Thank you Tim for the story. I am a Special Forces Medic and it disenheartens me to see fellow Americans conduct themselves in such a way. What they do desire is the attention of the media. It's unfortunate that the media cannot boycott something of this nature. Take care and Good luck "De oppresso Liber"

Tim you did an amazing job covering this! Serving in the Navy and as a past honor guard that buried several of our hero's, knowing our rights and what sacrifice it took, and contunues to take, a huge thanks to PGR for their actions and behavior. I'm amazed that this group chooses to ignore how this country was formed, but I'm confident that they will learn when each member meets the one and only God...
Sara PGR Rider August 28, 2006 8:48 am (Pacific time)
Thank you for exposing this hate group for what it is, a hate group. They dont have the guts to protest at the nations capital or their state capital, they have to be cowardly and protest a funeral of a soldier who gave all to give them the right to protest. My parents were part of the PGR riders that were there and Im so glad they and all the riders were there. The group is there to sheild the family and they did it well and with pride. Thanks Tim and thanks PGR!!!
Army Mom August 28, 2006 6:28 am (Pacific time)
More proud than I can express of the Patriot Guard Riders and what they do. Once again they have shielded a family in deep distress from the hateful rhetoric spewed by the Phelps bigots. However ... I take issue with this comment in the article which is hateful in its own way. "They claim that American military personnel are only dying in the wars overseas because America condones homosexuality. Yes, the same nation that soundly defeated a recent gay marriage proposal. " The "nation" has NOT defeated a gay marriage proposal, some misguided states have. Explain to me how the union of two people who love each other and wish to committ to each other "until death us do part" can in any way be "evil" or threaten MY marriage? To imply otherwise ... only legitimizes the Phelps hatemongers. Gays are not evil, they simply love a person of the same sex. Gay men and women are human beings ... gay rights are HUMAN rights.
Argonaut475 August 28, 2006 5:07 am (Pacific time)
The Phelps group are bigots and hyprocrits to say the least. They practice hate rather than love as proposed by Christ. Satan has a group here that he should be proud of.
SGT. Rodriguez (iraq) August 28, 2006 5:01 am (Pacific time)
"This we will defend" the right for people like we got here, the right to protest and enjoy the right of freedom of speech which is forbidden in countries like Iraq and many others. "This we will defend" a so called "church" protesting against the ones who gives them the right to protest against us, but it's ok they have that right, we earned it for people like them, but what they don't have a right is to protest at a funeral of a hero! That is where they are crossing the line, thank you to the patriot guard for standing up for us, thank you for all the support we get from you guys at our funerals as well as thank you to all the americans who truely believe in us! God bless you and god bless our troops.

I'm heartbroken to see this happening behind the scenes. Although we have FREEDOM of speech, WHY must people use it as a Hatred toward the Country that gave them the right to say those words in the first place? I read each and every comment so far, and I can only add a few words of my own,, THANK YOU PGR for being there, I will make every possible effort to let your Unselfish Work be known to all MY family and friends. Thank you for an unbiased report on the memorial for Marc Lee. I hope the family and friends of a true patriot and hero will be able to view it in recollection and know that the vitriolic rantings of a splinter cult will NEVER represent the standards of America. We were privileged to invited guests of the family and it was an honor to pay our respects to them for their sacifice. It is not taken lightly. We are "Riding with Respect" on behalf of a grateful nation and were able to reduce the presence of a few protestors to a non-issue. The family was shielded and the protestors left in virtual disgrace, quite un-noticed by even the mainstrem media. God bless America and God rest all of those who have had to give all to protect and defend our liberty. IPFREV Matt BLK RGT State Chaplain PGR, Oregon

Tim, Thank you for having the guts to cover this story and confronting these religous fanatics. It brought tears to my eyes but pride in my heart as I watched how the family was protected from hearing or viewing these idiots. They small group made them look even more silly but their words made them sound even worse.

Thank you for the positive story about Mark Lee and the Patriot Guard, we ride with the guard and are proud of what this group does. We will ride until there are no more kids and vets dying for their country. America can be proud of its military and the vets that deserve our respect for their courage.

Tim, Thank you for your accurate presentation of the happenings yesterday...I can say that I am very proud to be an American, a veteran, a member of PGR and the wife of Jon (Pipey) Moritz, the bagpiper that was there yesterday....While this display of disrespect occurs, we must remind ourselves that "they" would not be able to exercise that freedom of expression if it were not for heroes such as Petty Officer Marc Lee....we truly do HONOR and RESPECT him and the others who have, unselfishly lain thier lives on the line for all to enjoy these freedoms which most of us take for granted.... And to Ms. Phelps....YOUR WELCOME...from one of America's Finest...the United States Marine Corps has shed a great deal of BLOOD for you to spew your filth! Your welcome for not having met with ANY harm yesterday as well...and you are most welcome for the BAGPIPE music that was so proudly played for Marc...not YOU!

To Tim, and all that work at Salem News.com: Thank you for the respect that you give to the fallen heroes of the Pacific Northwest. The video I just watched shows mire of the stuff that makes America the great nation that She is. Your efforts to do what you do, and the stedadfastness of your devotion comes through clearly and powerfully. We, the Patriot Guard Riders, have the utmost respect for you and your crews. The necessity of us being called upon to honor, and if need be, protect the families of the fallen, is aptly portrayed in that video. I wish that we didn't have to be what we are, I wish that the poeple that seek to defile and dishonor the sacrifies of our men and women in uniform would see the error of their ways. Sadly, I'm afraid that such wishes are also in vain. But, whatever the reason, whenever the call comes, we will be there, and I earnestly hope you will be there also. Thank you so very, very much. Cal Manning, "Zopa", PGR state Captain, Oregon

Just wanted to clear up one fact. Marc Lee was not buried Saturday in Hood River. Her was buried in San Diego and Hood River was a memorial service. I was there and the Patriot Riders brought tears to many eyes as they rode in.
Tim King August 27, 2006 12:44 pm (Pacific time)
Grizz- I am proud to know you guys and thank for what you do. It is a collective effort, and it isn't political either, only a case of decency. We will go on supporting your efforts and later today there will be a story published about Mark Lee, and it will not reference the Kansas people as they really have nothing to do with it. Thanks Bro.

I want to thank Tim for his work on producing this video which shows the vile religous bigots in their misquided interpetation of the bible.
