Olympic Coach Hugh McCutcheon's Family Members Attacked in Beijing

Chinese officials called the attack a random incident and claimed that it was not related to the Olympic Games.

(BEIJING, China) - Chinese officials confirm that a knife wielding man killed one man and seriously injured two women in central Beijing Saturday. The man reportedly jumped to his death from an ancient tower, U.S. Olympic officials said.

The man who was killed, Todd Bachman, is the father-in-law of Olympic Men's Indoor Volleyball Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon. Todd Bachman's wife, Barbara, suffered serious injuries in the knife attack also.

There are conflicting reports about her condition. Initially her wounds were considered "serious and life-threatening" but there are also reports that she is in stable condition.

The International Olympic Committee published a statement saying they are deeply saddened to learn of a tragic incident which occurred earlier today involving two relatives of a coach for the United States Olympic Men's Indoor Volleyball Team.

"The United States Olympic Committee has confirmed that while visiting the Drum Tower tourist site in Beijing, near the Forbidden City, two family members were subjected to a violent attack," the statement read. They confirm that the lone assailant later committed suicide.

"The IOC would like to extend sincere condolences to the family and teammates of those involved, and to all members of the US delegation."

The IOC says they will provide whatever assistance is required, and they are in close contact with the US Olympic Committee. The IOC is also working closely with the Chinese authorities to obtain information on this incident as soon as possible.

Chinese officials called the attack a random incident and claimed that it was not related to the Olympic Games.
