Man Killed in Train v. Pedestrian Crash

The man had been sitting in the middle of the railroad tracks with his back toward the train.

train crash

(SALEM, Ore.) - Just before 7:00 a.m. this morning, an Amtrak train northbound at 34 mph struck a pedestrian approximately 250 yards north of Market Street NE.

Authorities say the decedent is a White male, approximately mid 50's to mid 60's. He had been sitting in the middle of the railroad tracks wearing only boxer shorts with his back toward the train.

When the engineer spotted him they put the train into emergency braking and sounded the horn, but the individual did not move and the train was unable to stop in time.

The train was delayed for approximately one hour and forty five minutes while police investigated. Anyone with information is asked to telephone the Salem Police Department.
