(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Salem Fire Department responded to a call for a shed fire at 5386 Aster St. NW at 4:41 PM on Wednesday.

First arriving firefighters reported that smoke was coming from the shed and flames were seen in the nearby trees as they arrived.

Salem firefighters aggressively attacked the fire and kept it from extending into the nearby, dry grass fields.

Earlier, homeowner, Vern Serex had been welding on his backhoe.

After completing the welding, he went into his home. He looked out to see what appeared to be his wood shop/metal shed on fire.

It was determined that a spark from the welding caused the grass to smolder and catch on fire.

The grass burned up to the exterior of the shed, causing it to catch on fire.

The flames then got up into the eaves of the shed.

No injuries were reported.

Damage to the building and contents was estimated to be $35,000.
