(SALEM) - Salem firefighters responded to an aparrment fire Thursday, at 12:33 AM. Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says a first alarm assigment (3 Engines,Ladder Truck, Medic Unit and Battlion Chief) responded to an Apartment Fire at 1851 13th Street SE. Captain Bryan Turner stated, "We could see a large column of smoke when we left the fire station." A second alarm was called at 12:36 am bringing more appratus and firefighters to the scene. When firefighters arrived on scene, they reported flames shooting out all windows of unit of 1851 13th street SE of Videothis single story 4-plex. Firefighters entered the structure fighting a wall of flames inside the unit. Other firefighters made sure the other three units had been evacuated. Due to firefighters aggressive attack they were able to knock down the fire shortly after their arrival, but also stopped the spread of the fire to the rest of the structure. Miss Carrick stated she arrived at home (1851 13th Street SE) some time after midnight and discovered smoke coming from the inside of her home. She tried to enter, but was forced back due to the fire. She ran to a neighbors to have them call 9-1-1. Miss Carrick lost her cat due to the fire. A total of 20 firefighters and 8 pieces of appratus were on scene to fight the fire. The damage assessment for all the units are as follows: 1847 13th Street – Smoke Damage – 1 person living in the unit (Mike Greenfield) 1849 13th Street – Minor Fire and Smoke Damage 1 person living in the unit (Lynch Crater) 1851 13th Street – Total Loss – 1 person living in the unit (Deana Carrick) 1853 13th Street – Minor Fire and Smoke Damage - Vacant Red Cross responded to assist the tenants with shelter. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
