Stalin Deported the Chechens in WWII

During the Second World War, Joseph Stalin, seized by one of his historic fits of paranoia and cruelty, declared the Chechen people disloyal to the U.S.S.R. and banished them from their homeland.

(PORTLAND, OR) - Remick seems to suggest the Chechen terrorists fighting for separation from Russia were justified because they were deported in WW2. Stalin had a “fit”? He was then in desperate battle with the invading Nazis who were able to mobilize supporters among the minorities, especially in the Baltic states and the Ukraine. FDR did not have a similar excuse.

David Remick , editor of the New Yorker, opens his rant on the Boston bombers:

“In the midst of the Second World War, Joseph Stalin, seized by one of his historic fits of paranoia and cruelty, declared the Chechen people disloyal to the U.S.S.R. and banished them from their homeland in the northern Caucasus to Central Asia and the Siberian wastes.”

How about: “In the midst of the second World War, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, seized by a historic fit of paranoia and cruelty, declared the Japanese-American people on the Pacific Coast disloyal to the USA and banished them from their homes to the deserts and wastes of their homeland.”

Michael Munk tries to glean important but overlooked items from the world media on the issues of the day and posts them on an irregular schedule. Although items can overlap, he also maintains separate lists for activists in Portland, Oregon and the Northwest, and special lists for: Labor, Latin America, Israel, Torture Taxis, Korea, and the Czech Republic.

Michael is a highly praised writer from an important generation whose book, the Portland Red Guide, has received high praise.

"City Commissioner Nick Fish gave me a copy. Sat down on my sofa and couldn't put it down until I finished. Fascinating!"
-- Tom Potter, Mayor of Portland 2005-2009

"Whoop! Whoop! I'm impressed by how many names from Portland's past have not made it into our official histories and public memorials. Some were good friends of mine. Local history is too often overlooked. Good work, Mike."
-- Bud Clark, Saloon keeper, Goose Hollow Inn, and Mayor of Portland, 1985–1992
