What About All of Those Campaign Promises?

Our street corners have so many homeless with cardboard signs that many cities are now taking reservations...

(SISTERS, Ore.) - It is amazing how our legislature including all of our State government accomplishes and tackles the issues that are not really important.

What happen to all the campaign promises about creating employment, affordable health care and balancing the budget? I guess we will not hear about those issues until the next election and we as the people will forget about the past promises and elect the same candidates.

How do we fix the budget? Our elected officials need to remember it is an honor and a privilege to serve. They can start paying for their healthcare and retirement benefits like the private sector. This alone will reduce our deficit considerably.

Healthcare: Why is it that our elected officials never investigate the medical profession and the insurance companies? The latest medical insurance scam involves in network and out of network locations. As an example: If you go emergency at St. Charles Medical Center, the hospital is in network for most insurance policies, but the doctors are out of network.

So you have an in network facility that hires out of network doctors. It doesn’t take an idiot to see it is another way to scam the citizens of Oregon.

Our street corners have so many homeless with cardboard signs that many cities are now taking reservations for those street corners.

The list goes on… It is time that we as a people start saying, NO and holding our elected officials accountable. There are no such words as Liberal and Conservative, we are all Americans. Political party differences have to be put aside to accomplish what is best for the people, not the party.

I agree totally . People forget that we did a lot of things that the Rep. would have a cow over today. Price controls ,90% tax on the wealthy, wage limits ,infrastructure projects, etc. Suprise, suprise ,it worked. As an added perk it spawned pensions ,health care etc. Peace

Thats kind of a different subject DJ .I was asked for an example of how higher taxes spur growth, encourage spending, etc. Peace

Not really my area of expertise, Doug,  but I think the conventional wisdom is about what governments do with the additional revenue. If the money is used to pay debts (Ie. to China etc) then nothing happens. But if the government spends the money on things like infrastructure upgrading, high speed rail, that sort of thing, then jobs are created and the economy expands. That's what happened in the 1930s. What does that have to do with my point DJ ? When capitol gains taxes fall the wealthy cash out and pocket the money. Peace

You're talking about taxes, Doug, and I was just pointing out that it's not just the wealthy who game the system. DJ

Sure can . Here goes , as a constuction worker I get to meet the builders and talk to them . One day I was working on a project talking to a big builder that owns thousands of apartments and he expressed that he really would like to just stop building but if he did he couldnt afford the TAXES on all his properties. Same thing all over in any business ,when you are profiting and the taxes are high you find ways to avoid the taxes .Expand, invest in equipment, pay more, provide pensions ,health care, etc. When the taxes are low you cash out and pocket the money at the low tax rate. Of course they move to places that will allow them to do just that. The school of enticing business to locate in your back yard by giving them land and tax breaks so the government can get the taxes from the workers they will hire is in no way a shared tax burden. It puts the entire load on workers. Last year I paid for COBRA because between meds and the tax break it made sense ,the difference was $100 a month well worth it since I had surgery ,an E room visit ,glasses etc. Instead of paying the taxes on it I put my money to good use avoiding taxes and investing in myself if it wasnt for the tax break I probably wouldnt have payed it. .Buying my home, same deal, ownership, equity ,and when I first bought ,a huge tax break on interest payments [more than twice the standard deduction and as much or less than renting ]. Point is taxes ,can be a huge incentive to invest and create jobs not just on the business level but on a personal one as well . Peace

Doug: The IRS estimates that they lose about $300 billion a year in unpaid taxes. Draw your own conclusions. DJ

Douglas can you provide some examples where higher taxes on a business has caused them to hire more workers? If you all of a sudden were taxed reducing your net income, and say your net income was reduced n%, would you spend more (money you no longer had), or would you cut back (that is you had no choice, because you had less money)? May I suggest a review of a huge business migration out of states like California because of higher taxes, to states with lower taxes.

Douglas Benson April 22, 2011 6:21 am (Pacific time)

Higher taxes on business is the only way to force them to re-invest in their business and employ workers, anyone who thinks business will not pocket the money while the taxes on that money is low fell and bumped their head.Ending NAFTA and taxing the mess out of imported goods any company that outsources jobs to countries that use slave labor or low wage workers would be a start.

Bill Griffith April 21, 2011 2:30 pm (Pacific time)

Richard Esterman there is only one party that is making things real tough for a business to be able to make enough profit to hire more people, and it does not matter what state you are in if that party is in power. There may be an exception or two, but otherwise that is how it is.
