Apr-17-2009 01:25TweetFollow @OregonNews President Obama Visits Mexico and South American NationsSalem-News.comAt the welcoming ceremony, the U.S. President was joined by Mexican President Calderon. They pledged to work together in new ways to crack down on the drug cartels tied to so much tragedy on both sides of the border.
(MEXICO CITY) - The President landed in Mexico Thursday where he met with President Felipe Calderon in anticipation of the Summit of the Americas. Before leaving, Obama reached out to all of the nations who will be in attendance with an op-ed published in English, Spanish or Portuguese in the following papers: Trinidad Express (Trinidad & Tobago); St. Petersburg Times (USA); Miami Herald (USA); El Nuevo Herald (USA); La Nación (Argentina); O Globo (Brazil); El Mercurio (Chile); El Tiempo (Colombia); La Nación (Costa Rica); El Comercio (Ecuador); El Universal (México); El Comercio (Perú); El Nuevo Día (Puerto Rico); El País (Uruguay); and El Nacional (Venezuela). The President laid out his vision for the Summit in the op-ed: "As we approach the Summit of the Americas, our hemisphere is faced with a clear choice. We can overcome our shared challenges with a sense of common purpose, or we can stay mired in the old debates of the past. For the sake of all our people, we must choose the future. Too often, the United States has not pursued and sustained engagement with our neighbors. We have been too easily distracted by other priorities, and have failed to see that our own progress is tied directly to progress throughout the Americas. My Administration is committed to the promise of a new day. We will renew and sustain a broader partnership between the United States and the hemisphere on behalf of our common prosperity and our common security. But the President made clear that this commitment would be more than rhetorical. He pointed to the dramatic and long overdue shift in policy towards Cuba, and forthrightly pointed out that there are many other issues that will be difficult to grapple with: "The United States will strongly support respect for the rule of law, better law enforcement, and stronger judicial institutions. Security must be advanced through our commitment to partner with those who are courageously battling drug cartels, gangs and other criminal networks throughout the Americas. And our efforts start at home. By reducing demand for drugs and curtailing the illegal flow of weapons and bulk cash south across our border, we can advance security in the United States and beyond." At the welcoming ceremony, the U.S. President was joined by Mexican President Calderon. They pledged to work together in new ways to crack down on the drug cartels tied to so much tragedy on both sides of the border. "At a time when the Mexican government has so courageously taken on the drug cartels that have plagued both sides of the borders, it is absolutely critical that the United States joins as a full partner in dealing with this issue, both through initiatives like the Merida Initiative, but also on our side of the border, in dealing with the flow of guns and cash south." Obama also discussed the "US-Mexico Bilateral Framework on Clean Energy and Climate Change," which will focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, adaptation, market mechanisms, forestry and land use, green jobs, low carbon energy technology development and capacity building. Specific areas of joint cooperation under the Bilateral Framework may include: · Collaborating on training/workshops and information exchanges for government officials to explore possible cooperation on greenhouse gas inventories, various greenhouse gas reduction strategies, and market mechanisms; · Through our collaboration in the Border 2012 program, working with our respective border states to provide opportunities for information exchange and joint work on renewable energy, such as wind and solar, that could include technical and economic project feasibility studies, project development, and capacity building in the border region. Other border work could include a bilateral border crossing planning group to develop strategies to reduce emissions from idling vehicles, among other initiatives that may be deemed appropriate; · Expanding our extensive bilateral collaboration on clean energy technologies to facilitate renewable power generation including by addressing transmission and distribution obstacles between our countries; fostering Energy Service Company market development; and highlighting existing and proposed areas for cooperation on clean energy and energy efficiency under the North American Energy Working Group; · Promoting academic and scientific exchanges on renewable energy; · Pursuing projects on adapting to climate change, including coastal or disaster risk reduction activities as well as adaptation in key sectors; and · Working jointly with other countries to take advantage of growing Mexican expertise on greenhouse gas inventories, adaptation and project planning. This work could also possibly include a shared US/Mexican initiative to help developing countries in the Americas create low carbon development strategies plans for adaptation to climate change, and monitoring and accounting for the results. To all: Anyone with real dissent or dialog on ANY problem is always welcomed here --it was planned that way. Our record proves that via literally thousands of items now. For those who seek only to perpetuate personal feeling via attack on others, you abuse not only S-N's welcome but citizen responsibility as major part of First Amendment. That's to your own public shame, by your own words, and damage to our democracy. Support your feelings with rational, reasonable points, by links to respected national sources independent of any particular group. That's the pattern set by our Founders in their famed Federalist Papers, leading to the Declaration and Constitution --and the Bill of Rights. What better protocol for the 21st Century can we find than that ? "Use it or lose it" applies to First Amendment; if we allow abuse long enough, as in ferocious, futile, all too facile party warfare, we will lose its real meaning, reduced to rubbish --as too often found here in Comments. For pressing dangers to all Internet sites, see FCC news re growing demands for more responsible use of channels, due specifically to this real shadow on open, democratic use.

TO editor: you mentioned problems you are unhappy about. I am very interested in knowing them. Hoping you will write an article? I am writing this with no spirit accept curiousity. I think you should write an article.
thanks
Editor: I wrote about the AIPAC conference for one, and several other criticisms have been part of my writing, especially the way he laughed at the notion of decriinalizing marijuana. I have thrown many stones at him for different things, but I sure wouldn't want to be in his shoes. Obama inherited the mess; I sincerely hope he is able to bring us into a better place as a country and I think everyone getting behind that makes sense. I certainly applaud the new tax structure.

Thanks Tim but this is Daniel P , in Mexico not Daniel J in Canada . Anonymous , I do not see Obama as savior , only when compaired to Bush , who is hated in most of the world ,with good reason . Thank God you are not in charge, we would be in more wars than Bush started !
Tim King: Sorry for confusing you Daniel, I thought this comment was going on the other Daniel's story and it shows how I can get ahead of myself. Anyway, I mean this in your defense also; I want the comment section to be a place of respectful, intelligent debate. Thanks for your input and I wish I was in Mexico City with you, thanks.

Daniel, why heart is bleeding. Bush as evil, Obama as the savior of the world. You are just another brain washed liberal. Off course Barak Hussain Obama is very well liked, he wants amnesty for all the illegal. I just wonder if Obama bowed to the President of Mexico.
Editor: OK, here's how this works. You can share your thoughts in the comment section, but you have to actually have one first. It is a lot easier for me to just flush comments that I don't like. Daniel Johnson is a member of our team and he takes time out of his busy schedule to write articles for us that are something you can read or choose not to read. Your approach shows everyone that you have nothing of any real substance to criticize Obama for. Believe me, there are problems and I'm unhappy about a number of things, but I guarantee they aren't the same things you are worried about. If you choose to leave another comment, leave the insults out and make your point in a way that will maybe reach someone, that is the point isn't it? If you just want to write abusive crap, or anything that even borders on it, it will never show up.

I am in Mexico city and Obama was very well received in person and in the media . A total reverse from Bush who was regarded as evil .
