The district reminds parents that students are participating in the event can be cited for truancy.

McNary High School Assistant Prinicpal Jay Crystal, says students at his who participate in the rally will face either detention or suspension at the school.

Patty Hoffert, the Salem/Keizer School District's Secondary Education Assistant Director said "We want to continue to provide orderly and safe schools for all students. We want to use the teachable moment to help further their understanding of democracy and freedom of speech."

If you are for or against this... makes no difference. I think it is stupid for a school to not allow their students act as voices... That being said, schools should have had the insight to offer students a safe way to get to the capitol and have an adult oversee them. This is a very big issue and can affect many people. Including students or parents, I think that it's sad schools take the stance we had in the 60's. We should support our kids right to freedom and allow them to do so in a structured manner. Then have a class discussion about it if need be. We are going to make a decision as a union that will be history changing. Even though they can't vote or change this particular event. They should be heard if it is done in a respectful manner. I am not into protests and such but if they believe in it and want to let someone know how they feel.... Well that is our civil right, and why people want to be in our country. Locking them up in a school threatening suspension, or detention is idiotic, and will not create any solution. I applaud anyone who stepped up and spoke their minds. That is the difference between a leader and a follower. Even if you don't agree with the cause, it is our right.... Great job students and Salem News for covering it.

The last poster needs to rethink their comments, Salem-News.com has paid attention to this from the beginning. Go back and look at our stories on this subject. We are fair, and you gain little by getting personal about it. Indeed, it is you who makes your cause look less serious.
