U.S. Stocks Tumbling on Credit Woes

At 12:40 PM the dow was down 310 points, the NASDAQ was down 47 points, and the S & P 500 was down 35 points.

(NEW YORK) - The Dow industrials dropped more than 200 points at the start of Thursday's session following more credit worries.

The Dow Jones industrial average tumbled by as much as 241 points, before rebounding a little to stand down 266 points just before 8:00 AM PT.

The S&P 500 was down 19.30 points while the Nasdaq Composite index was down 17.88 points.

4.5 Quake Jolts Los Angeles Area Residents

There are no reports of injuries or major damage.

(LOS ANGELES) - A moderate earthquake rattled the Los Angeles area early Thursday morning, shaking residents out of bed and knocking some items off shelves.

According to the USGS the magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck just before 1:00 AM about 4 miles northwest of Chatsworth.

The quake had a depth of 3.4 miles.

Thurston High Killer`s New Trial Denied

Kinkel's attorney says he plans to appeal the case.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Kip Kinkel's request for a new trial was shot down Wednesday by a Marion County judge. Kinkel was convicted for the shooting at Thurston High School in 1998 and is serving out a 111 year sentence.

The Springfield Thurston High shooting in 1998 left two students dead and 25 wounded. Kinkel shot the students after murdering his parents at home. He was 15 at the time of the offenses.

While officials in Moscow deny any involvement, an air traffic controller in Georgia says he watched the blip on his radar originate from Russia, fly to the location of the missile firing, and then return.

Construction Zone Crash Spares Major Injuries

Witness reported a teen's driving behavior prior to the crash as being somewhat erratic.

(SUTTLE LAKE, Ore.) - A three vehicle rear end collision occurred today in a posted construction zone on Hwy 20 W near Suttle Lake. The crash was reported at 1:20 PM.

The construction zone was well posted with three signs prior to the flagging operation. The signs read Road Work Ahead; Be Prepared to Stop and a sign with picture of a worker holding a sign saying Next Mile.

Salem Fire Department`s Official Historian Retires

Captain Blumenstein's dedication to the community and the Department will be extremely missed by all members of the Salem Fire Department.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Captain Larry Blumenstein officially retired on August 7th, 2007 after 21-years of service to the citizens of Salem.

Captain Larry Blumenstein's first encounter with the Salem Fire Department occurred in 1976 when he printed 1000 copies of "History of the Salem, Oregon Fire Department" while working in his family publishing business; copies of that book are still available at the Marion County Historical Society in Salem.
