Holocaust Survivor Will Speak in Salem, Oregon

Weiner has been a speaker for more than 340 audiences in Oregon and Washington.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Alter Weiner’s personal Holocaust story began brutally – with the murder of his father on September 11th, 1939. On the anniversary of this wrenching event, Weiner will share that beginning and the firestorm of events that followed in a special presentation at Salem Public Library.

Weiner will present “From a Name to a Number: A Holocaust Survivor’s Story” from 7:00 -8:30 PM Tuesday, September 11th in Loucks Auditorium at Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. SE. His presentation is free and open to the public. His recently published autobiography, “From A Name to A Number,” will be available for purchase at the event.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The Oregon Wing of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol was awarded an "Excellent" rating by a team USAF evaluators during their bi-annual official evaluated Homeland Security Training Exercise this last weekend.

The exercise, which was managed from the CAP's Incident Command Center facility at the Aurora State Airport and an identical facility at the CAP's building at the Medford Airport, focused primarily on a 5.9 earthquake event in the Willamette Valley.

(VANCOUVER, Wa.) - 779,000 Washingtonians did not have health insurance coverage in 2006, according to Census Bureau data released yesterday. Nationally, the number of uninsured rose from 44.8 million in 2005 to 47 million in 2006, including 8.66 million uninsured children, up from 8.05 million in 2005.

Despite the American families' continued struggle to afford health insurance for their children, the President has vowed to veto the State Children's Health Insurance Program Congress passed this summer that would extend health insurance to millions of uninsured children.

Oregon Schools Receive Preliminary Federal Ratings Under NCLB

74% (923 of 1236 Oregon schools) met AYP standards compared to 70% in 2005-06.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo released today the preliminary federal ratings under No Child Left Behind for Oregon’s public elementary, middle, and high schools.

The 2006-07 preliminary report lists Oregon public schools that are making adequate yearly progress (AYP) and those that have been identified for improvement under state and federal requirements.

Schools may appeal their preliminary rating, and final AYP designations will be released in October on the school’s report card.

Both products were packaged in 16-ounce black trays and labeled as "Northwest Finest" brand Natural Ground Beef, 7% fat. The red and black label bears a UPC code of "7 52907 60012 7."

Keizer Man Survives Stabbing (UPDATE)

Investigators say the location of the crime scene was not initially correct, this places the case out of the Keizer Police jurisdiction.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - Keizer Police were called out to a report of a stabbing Wednesday night that reportedly happened in the 1000 block of Clearview Avenue Northeast in Keizer.

Upon further investigation of this incident, investigators say they have learned the initial location described by the victim was incorrect. Investigators now believe the assault and stabbing occurred at or near the intersection of York Avenue NE and Edith Street NE in Marion County.

West Nile Virus Identified in Clackamas County Bird

There have been no human, horse or other animal cases of West Nile virus identified in Clackamas County.

(MILWAUKIE, Ore. ) - West Nile virus has been detected in a dead crow in the Milwaukie area of Clackamas County, a Vector Control official reported today.

Testing at the Oregon State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Corvallis confirmed the presence of the virus.

This is the first case of West Nile virus identified in Clackamas County since the virus was introduced into the United States in 1999.
