Chasing Oregon`s Fine Finned Warriors
Gerrit Roelof Salem-News.com OUTDOORS
Throughout my afternoon stroll through this canyon, I hooked up with many a fine fighter in the riffles and heads of the pools.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
I have a favorite coastal stream that I try to visit every fall for the Chinook run, we’ll call it Stream X. The first good push of fish usually arrives here in early November.
This year’s returns are so minimal that Chinook fishing in this section of water is totally closed. However, my love for this section of water is far more about the experience of being there than putting meat on the bank.

A Dad’s Point-of-View, by Bruce Sallan Salem-News.com
Congratulations to Bruce Sallan for his 50th Salem-News.com article!
(AGOURA, Calif.) -
Sitting in Starbuck’s the other day, waiting for my car to be serviced, I sat next to a mom who shared a “dirty little parenting secret.” Her kids, and she and her husband, have “favorites.”
She gets along better with their younger child while her husband gets along better with the older child. I believe that this is natural, ubiquitous, and something most parents are ashamed to admit.

Good relationships don't come easy, but personal growth is also a benefit.
(AGOURA, Calif.) -
In every marriage, spouses face an inevitable choice between their children and their spouse. It is a classic dilemma that confronts every couple and one that is inescapable and difficult.

E-mail, Etiquette, and Friends
A Dad’s Point-of-View, by Bruce Sallan Salem-News.com
Our children are growing up with technology and it will all be a part of their lives hereafter.
(AGOURA, Calif.) -
E-mail is so ubiquitous that we forget that it isn’t talking on the phone or having a conversation in person. Subtlety, facial expressions, or tonality are all lost in an e-mail message.
I have found this has gotten me in trouble when I think I’m being funny, subtle, or sarcastic in an e-mail. And, the habit many of us have of forwarding a joke, photo, or an article creates even greater problems in many cases.

Dawn Hatchard Salem-News.com
The thrills and spills were not in short order, no way!
(SALEM, Ore.) -
The debut of the Cherry City Roller Derby in Salem over the weekend was a massive success, so much so that people were turned away at the door of the Salem Pavilion.
Crowd estimates were in the neighborhood of 3000 and that seems like a conservative estimate. The hardcore fast-paced knock 'em out of your way approach that this sport represents, was matched by the buzz and excitement of eager fans that waited a long time to see this women's sport reemerge.
