(SAN FRANCISCO) - John Kerry with President Karimov The death of long-time Uzbekistan dictator Islam Karimov has brought rare U.S. media attention to the Central Asian country of 30 million. Uzbekistan is ranked among the half dozen worst countries in the world for human-rights abuses.

What U.S. government officials and our media mostly ignore, however, is that American taxpayers subsidized that regime and its brutal security apparatus for most of Karimov’s thirty-five years in power.

Uzbekistan: Arrest of Human Rights Defender Uktam Pardayev

Uktam Pardayev's problems stated after a visit to his house by officials from the American Embassy about his Human Rights work.

(SALEM) - Uzbek map An Uzbek human rights defender, Mr Uktam Pardayev, was taken recently by police and those officials are not cooperating with Mr. Pardayev's family.

Uktam Pardayev is the Chairperson of the Independent Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan (IHRSU) in the region of Djizak.

Gulshan Karaeva has previously been the subject of threats and intimidation; her dog has been poisoned, she has been physically attacked.

(SALEM) - Gulshan Karaeva Human rights defenders in Uzbekistan need to know their government will enforce their right to operate without fear of reprisals and free of all restrictions and reprisals, including judicial harassment.

At this point, the very opposite is still taking place and it is taking a toll on human rights defender Ms Gulshan Karaeva, who was arrested in late September and charged with “Slander”, and “Insult”.

Salem-News Human Rights Ambassador William Gomes contacts Hillary Clinton over forced labor in Uzbsikstan.

(HONG KONG) - U.S. Sec. of State Hillary Clinton Child labor in Uzbekistan... a problem that its own government seems to have no interest in controlling. Children as young as 10 are forced to participate in a mandated cotton production system. The U.S. government should raise a voice in this matter and call for an end to this practice.

Year after year, the Uzbek govt. mandates that farmers grow cotton, and children plant, weed and harvest to meet their assigned quotas.
