Hero Who Served in Four Wars Laid to Rest in Washington

It was an honor to be there and to learn a little more about one of our great heroes who fought in and survived the conflicts of our nation's recent history.

(WASHOUGAL, Wash.) - Salem-News.com I was fortunate this week to attend a ceremony in Washougal, Washington to help honor one of our heroes from the greatest generation.

I had no idea who this person was upon arriving there, and barely even remembered his name, but that changed when I learned a little more, just by looking at a display in the gathering area of the church.

DPR Korea’s Nuclear Test Threatens Global Disarmament Efforts, Ban Warns

CFR Report Warns U.S. Must Prepare for Potential Instability in North Korea

Council on Foreign Relations says the world needs to pay attention.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - North Korea's Kim Jong-Il Continuing uncertainties about the health of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il and possible succession arrangements “warrant heightened attention and preparation” by U.S. policymakers, says a new Council on Foreign Relations report.

“The risks are too great and the stakes too high” for U.S. policymakers “to rely on last-minute improvisation for a peaceful and stable outcome” in nuclear-armed North Korea, says the report sponsored by CFR’s Center for Preventive Action (CPA).

Robot Technology Making Strides (VIDEO)

The robots of yesterday's movies are today's reality. Some are modeled after men, some are fashioned like dogs, others are created to look like beautiful women. They walk, show facial expression, carry on conversations, and identify objects.

(SALEM, Ore.) - robots The technology to build various types of robots has been around for a while, but ideas have really emerged in recent years along with microprocessors, particularly in the U.S., Japan and Korea. The various robot projects under development throughout the world are amazing.

The videos featured here show a variety of these new creations and they offer a clear idea of where this is going. Designers say extremely lifelike robots will soon be able to serve in numerous capacities that range from household duties to security.

One of the robots called Aiko, is capable of speech, reading, distinguishing color, recognizing faces and identifying objects.

Soldier Missing In Action From The Korean War Is Identified

In 1998, a joint U.S./Democratic People's Republic of Korea team, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), excavated a site containing the remains of a U.S. soldier who died south of Unsan in the general vicinity where Edward O'Brien was last seen.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Salem-News.com The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Korean War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

He is Sergeant Edward J. O'Brien, U.S. Army, of Omaha, Nebraska. He will be buried July 2nd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Remembering Two Marines and Two Korean War Soldiers With Very Different Stories

Two men fought in the Korean War and came home over 50 years ago; two others have been missing until now. They are all being laid to rest this week.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com "Some gave all and all gave some." That is a very fitting thought for this story about four Americans who served their country during the Korean War.

The Army soldiers are Captain Edward B. Scullion and Private first-class Elwood D. Reynolds, both of Virginia.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Soldiers and Marines fought bitterly on the Chosin Peninsula in North Korea The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of two U.S. servicemen, missing from the Korean War, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

New Members Join Veterans` Department Advisory Committee

The nine-member Committee was formed by statute in 1945.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Veterans building in Salem The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs today welcomed four new members to the Department’s Advisory Committee, including the Committee’s first Native American member, a Vietnam era veteran, a Gulf War era veteran, and an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran.

Leaving the board are Staryl C. Austin, Jr. of Salem, both a World War II and Korean War veteran; Furlton M. Burns of Portland, a Vietnam veteran; Walter R. Crews of Aurora, a Korea and Vietnam era veteran; and Robert Haltiner of Oregon City, a Vietnam Veteran.
