Mother Wanted for Death of Toddler, Injured Teen in Ore. Motel Room Arrested

This was the first homicide in Cannon Beach in almost 50 years.

(CANNON BEACH, Ore. ) - Police in Cannon Beach, Oregon say they have arrested the mother who was wanted in connection with the murder of her 2-year-old daughter and the attempted murder of her teenage daughter.

40-year-old Jessica Smith was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after her vehicle was found in a heavily forested area near Cannon Beach, police chief Jason Schermerhorn said.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Salem Police and the Marion County Sheriff's Office have both confirmed to Salem-News.com Sunday night that 40-year-old Jessica Smith of Goldendale, Washington, who is wanted in connection with the death of a toddler and her teen sister found critically wounded in a Cannon Beach hotel, was NOT arrested in Salem or Marion County as many people on social media have been reporting.

Salem Police Lt. Steve Birr says their office has been getting lots of calls about the situation, and that Salem Police arrested Smith are not true. Marion County Sheriff's spokesman Sergeant Chris Baldridge also confirmed that currently there is nobody being held at the Marion County Jail.
