Baserunning Errors Cost Volcanoes in 7-5 Loss

Hillsboro hopped on the board early with a three run first inning.

(KEIZER, Ore. ) - Salem-Keizer entered the final game of a three-game series against the Hillsboro Hops looking for their third straight series win.

Hillsboro had other ideas, as a three-run rally in the top of the eighth gave the Hops a lead they would not give back, as they went on to defeat the Volcanoes 7-5 on Sunday night at Volcanoes stadium.

Volcanoes Win Wild One over Hops, 6-5

To lead off the third inning, Mende collected his first hit as a Volcano.

(HILLSBORO, Ore. ) - It was a wild ending to another nail-biter from Ron Tonkin Field, as the Volcanoes relied on a game-ending, bases-loaded strike out from Eury Sanchez in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 6-5 victory on Saturday night.

The Volcanoes entered the home-half of the ninth inning with a 6-4 lead in hand. Salem-Keizer reliever Eury Sanchez surrendered a two-out ground-rule double to Hops' nine-hole hitter Justin Gonzalez on a ball that bounced off of the outfield turf and cleared the outfield wall.

(HILLSBORO, Ore. ) - The Volcanoes entered Friday evening's contest just three games back of the Hops in the Northwest League South Division standings; a win would move them one step closer to clinching a playoff berth with a first-half championship.

"Any time you're playing your division you always want to beat them, especially with [Hillsboro] being four games up on us," manager Gary Davenport said.

Now, after winning the series opener last night 5-1, the Volcanoes needed every bit of their nine innings in Saturday's game to obtain that ever illusive series victory.

The Hops put an end to Salem-Keizer's improbable stretch by defeating the Volcanoes 4-3 in front of 2,654 at Ron Tonkin Field.
