UN Secretary-General Mourns Deaths of Top UN Officials in Haiti Quake

UN officials lost their lives in the devastating 7.0 magnitude tremors on Tuesday.

(PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti) - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Haiti Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon paid tribute to the top United Nations officials who perished in the catastrophic earthquake which struck Haiti on Tuesday.

“In every sense of the word, they gave their lives for peace,” Ban said.

(NEW YORK) - Earthquake survivors in Haiti In the wake of Tuesdayʼs devastating earthquake in Haiti, Not On Our Watch directed $1 million in emergency response funds to provide medical services for victims of the disaster.

The beneficiary of the grant, Partners In Health (PIH), is addressing the critical shortage of hospitals and care centers destroyed during the disaster.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - Ggeologist Robert Yeats, a professor emeritus at Oregon State University An international earthquake expert at OSU suggested just over one week ago that one of the world’s most at-risk locations for a major, destructive earthquake is the fault that runs through Haiti and near Port-au-Prince.

That comment was made during an interview with a reporter for Scientific American, by geologist Robert Yeats, a professor emeritus who said the death toll would be tremendous.

Haiti`s Devastation

The world’s natural concern for others has been noticed and is worthy of admiration, especially in Haiti, where people exist more as a happening than as a government for and of the people.

(PASO ROBLES, Calif.) - UN soldiers help evacuate the injured. The devastation in Haiti and the nature of the people is such that - without a workable government of their own - chaos appears to me to be the order of the day for the foreseeable future.

Breast Milk Donations Needed for Haiti Quake Victims

A spokesperson for the group says all breast milk donations are screened and pasteurized before delivery.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Haitian refugees The World Health Organization and Adventist Medical Center are asking for human breast milk donations to help babies of the Haiti quake, and a Portland, Oregon group is the connection point for those who can help.

The Adventist Medical Center’s breast milk donor depot opened in August 2009 as the only donor depot in Portland, and one of only two donor depots in the Pacific Northwest. It has been the subject of a past Salem-News.com article.

The UN launched a flash appeal for some $550 million this afternoon.

Medical Teams International Responds to Crisis in Haiti

Their first team landed safely, the second team will leave Sunday, January 17.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Damage in Haiti Medical Teams International’s first disaster relief team arrived safely in Haiti today with medical personnel from throughout the Pacific Northwest; including Seattle, Portland and Spokane. The second team will leave Sunday, Jan. 17.

The team that arrived today included veteran volunteers Dr. Joe Markee of Portland, Ore. and Dr. Dan Diamond from Bremerton, Wash.
