Beware of a Medical Alert Scam Sweeping the Nation

Victims of this scam can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - The Better Business Bureau reports that a medical alert telemarketing scam is sweeping the nation this year. Seniors and their families or caretakers are frequent targets of this scam.

In recent months, consumers have received calls – often repeatedly – from telemarketers offering a “senior medical alarm” or similar personal security device. The calls come from untraceable numbers in the 314, 636 and 573 area codes.

Telephone Scams See Surge

Anyone receiving a suspicious telephone call and suspects similar fraud, should notify PGE at 1-800-542-8818 and the police.

(TIGARD OR) - Tigard Police are cautioning both businesses and residents regarding a telephone scam which appears to be widespread in the metro area. Tigard Police have taken calls from both business owners and residential customers of PGE.

Almost verbatim, the caller advises the potential victim that a new "smart meter" needs to be installed immediately or power will be shut-off.
