A Family of Firefighters at Ground Zero

We were all one family. Many of us had never met before, and most of us will never see each other again. But we came together when it counted most.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Whenever there is a major event in your life, there should always be one constant: your family.

Another family I am a proud member of is the fire service, and on September 11th, my family experienced a loss that no family should ever have to endure.

(SEATTLE) - The Coast Guard and Charleston, Ore., Fire Department responded to a boat explosion and fire near the Charleston marina, Tuesday.

At approximately 2:00 p.m Coast Guard Station Coos Bay, Ore., received multiple reports of two people in the water after a 21-foot pleasure boat exploded near the Charleston marina.

(HARRISBURG, Ore.) - Firefighters are on the scene of a massive three-alarm fire that started around 7:00 p.m. in Harrisburg Oregon.

The fire broke out at the R.M. Cook Farms hay barn in Harrisburg, and required the efforts of the firefighters from six additional agencies.

(LOS ANGELES) - As firefighters around the nation battle at least 175 wildfires, Southern California is losing lives and homes to the most nightmarish blaze in years. The Station Fire has already scorched 140,150 acres and is only 22% contained.

Fire officials with Cal Fire, say the Mount Wilson TV and radio communication towers are directly threatened as well as the historic observatory, located in the foothills northeast of Los Angeles.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The summer of 2009 has been another season fighting inferno for Erickson Air-Crane, manufacturer of the world-renowned Helitanker and heavy-lift helicopters.

As an essential tool for the Forest Service, the Aircranes are credited for helping contain several wildfires and are now hard at it on some of the worst fires of the season.

Dry Terrain Boosts Monstrous Growth of California Wildfires

The smoke plume from the fire has been able to surge over 20,000 feet high.

(LOS ANGELES) - Though extreme heat and low humidity have been playing a role, it has largely been excessive drought and steep terrain that have allowed the Station fire burning north of Los Angeles to spread so rapidly without Santa Ana winds.

The fire has exploded from covering 5,500 acres Friday to over 100,000 acres of the Angeles National Forest by the end of the day Monday.

The next few days are forecast to have a warming and drying trend, which will do little to help these crews battle the fire.

(SALEM, Ore.) - “This is the largest fire camp we’ve seen in at least 30 years” according to one employee at the Sweet Home Ranger District.

Microwave Fire Reaches 65% Containment

Fire officials urge everyone to use extra caution when returning to areas that have been affected by the fire.

(MICROWAVE, Ore.) - Shortly after residents returned home from the Microwave Fire evacuation, fire crews performed successful burnout operations to strengthen containment lines on the northwest flank of the fire.

Nancy Hirsch, Incident Commander with the Oregon Department of Forestry, says the fire is now fully lined, with containment at 65% and 1,250 acres burned.
