2010 Winter Rod & Speed Show Sees Biggest Turnout Ever!

An event to benefit a local family saw the biggest turnout ever.

(ALBANY, Ore.) - The 2010 Winter Rod & Speed Show in Albany, Oregon was a blast from the past. Hundreds of cars of all varieties from throughout Oregon were on hand to show off their rolling works of art.

(PORT-AU-PRINCE/SALEM) - Cite Soleil is one of the poorest, most troubled neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince. The streets were controlled by warlords until United Nations peacekeepers liberated it from gangs in 2008.

The slums here are grim in the best of times, and now locals find themselves sleeping on the street. Their homes crushed from last week’s earthquake, thousands are buried beneath rubble.

(PORT-AU-PRINCE.SALEM) - Search and rescue workers continued to work through the early hours of Wednesday (20 Jan) to rescue a 25-year-old woman from the ruins of a collapsed market in Port au Prince.

Bruno Besson is Search and Rescue Team Leader with Sauveteurs Sans Frontieres in France: “We are here in Haiti, in a supermarket. We are trying to pickup a lady who is alive after seven days underground....”

Winter Rod and Speed Show Benefit Car Show Saturday in Albany

Free Mattel Hot Wheel cars will be given to the first 100 kids through the door.

(SALEM, Ore.) - After two successful events in 2007 and 2008, the Winter Rod and Speed Show returns to the Linn County Fair and Expo Center, this time benefiting the family of Cherokee Pizano.

Rich Bailey, organizer, says the show will have something for everyone, featuring over 100 show cars, classic cars, custom trucks, roadsters and more.

Breastmilk and Charity for Haiti

Nation's largest Human Milk group releases statement on situation in Haiti.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) is saddened by the disastrous earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010. Our thoughts and prayers reach out to this country that now has lost so much.

Many areas have no water, electricity, housing or health care facilities. Recognizing the life saving importance of breastfeeding of infants and young children in this situation, we speak in support of protection and support of Haitian breastfeeding women.

Breast Milk Donations Needed for Haiti Quake Victims

A spokesperson for the group says all breast milk donations are screened and pasteurized before delivery.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The World Health Organization and Adventist Medical Center are asking for human breast milk donations to help babies of the Haiti quake, and a Portland, Oregon group is the connection point for those who can help.

The Adventist Medical Center’s breast milk donor depot opened in August 2009 as the only donor depot in Portland, and one of only two donor depots in the Pacific Northwest. It has been the subject of a past Salem-News.com article.

Gaza Freedom Movement Remains Determined Despite Challenges

The convoy is trying to break the siege of Gaza that Israel, with the help of Egypt, has held fast since 2007.

(CAIRO/SALEM) - The Viva Palestina aid convoy to Gaza left London on December 6th and its tireless group of activists have received serious challenges on this journey - at every bend in the road.

All they want to do is deliver vehicles, food and medicine to the people of Gaza who were decimated during Israel's several week long attack one year ago that targeted schools, hospitals and thousands of people's homes. Israel used white phosphorous to start fires and over 1,400 people died while thousands received serious injuries.
