In Kabul, Widows and Orphans Move Up

The women I visited today are moving on up; single desperate mothers with children moving up the slope into a cold vacuum, fleeing the streets and daily business of a city that can't feed or use them.

(KABUL) - Zainab, Umalbanin, Ali, Kathy and Martha going up the mountainside Yesterday, four young Afghan Peace Volunteer members, Zainab, Umalbanin, Abdulhai, and Ali, guided Martha and me along narrow, primitive roads and crumbling stairs, ascending a mountain slope on the outskirts of Kabul.

Above us, women in bright clothing were navigating the treacherous roads with heavy water containers on their heads or shoulders. I marveled at their strength and tenacity. “Yes, they make this trip every morning,” Umalbanin said, as she helped me regain my balance after I had slipped on the ice.

Afghan Soldier Killings Highest Ever

MORE than 1000 Afghan soldiers died this year.

(KABUL ) - Afghan soldiers on maneuvers in 2007 near Kabul "In the past nine months, 906 Afghan army soldiers were killed. A total of 1056 soldiers were killed in 2012," defence ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi told reporters in Kabul on Sunday.

"The toll has increased compared to the previous years."

(SACRAMENTO, CA) - Ten young Afghan girls laid to rest A landmine explosion in eastern Afghanistan killed ten little girls in mid-December. Such a number is unthinkable, yet we should all consider it for this is the price of war and no family on the face of this earth should ever have to bury ten little children at once.

The girls were gathering firewood according to reports, when one unknowingly struck the mine with an ax.

New Figures Released in US AfPak War Casualties

The Pentagon and media fail to list deaths in hospitals outside of the war theatres.

(PORTLAND, OR) - Service in Kabul, Afghanistan for Scott Lundell of Utah, a Lieutenant killed fighting in Kandahar. The Pentagon updated its AfPak war casualty figures.

US foreign fighters in Afghanistan suffered 86 casualties in the 14 days ending Nov. 28. The official casualty total is now 115,882.
