Salem Child Selected to Go to The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team’s Kids Camp

Annie Flood is one of 20 kids From across America to be coached by Afghanistan & Iraq War Veterans.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Annie Flood from Salem is one of 20 children from across America selected to participate in the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team’s second annual Kids Camp. All the children selected have amputations or are missing limbs.

Flood and the other kids will be coached by members of the WWAST, all veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars who have amputations but have faced and conquered their challenges to athletically compete at a high level.

Oregon Troops Headed for Afghanistan

Elements of the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team have served in Saudia Arabia, The Sinai, Kuwait, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Oregon Army National Guard's 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team is scheduled to mobilize three battalions to Afghanistan this summer as part of the regular rotational cycle of forces to provide security missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

A mobilization ceremony is scheduled for June 7 at the Salem Armory Auditorium, located at 2310 17th Street NE, in Salem, Ore. The ceremony begins at 2:00 p.m.

Veterans for Peace is Banned From Duluth`s Memorial Day Parade

(DULUTH, MN) - For the first time in recent memory, the Duluth-area Vets for Peace Chapter 80 float has been banned from participating in Duluth’s Memorial Day parade.

The Northland Veterans Services Committee, which is the organizing committee that is planning this year’s Memorial Day parade has informed the local chapter of Vets for Peace that it will not be allowed to participate. The decision was recently announced over the phone to VFP Chapter 80 president Phil Anderson. The person on the phone simply said that the planning committee "didn't like us or our group”.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley visited Lines for Life on Friday to see its military helpline in action and met with veterans and veteran advocates to discuss how to stem the rising tide of suicide among veterans.

“Too many of our men and women in uniform are coming home from battle with less visible wounds – PTSD, traumatic brain injury and depression. But we’re not making the same kind of commitment to treating those wounds of war,” said Merkley.

Car Prowlers Steal Veteran`s Bronze Star and Other Awards

It would be greatly appreciated if the items were returned to the local Veteran that earned them.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Sometime during the night between Wednesday and Thursday, car prowlers struck near Tanner Creek Park in West Linn. The thieves made off with a backpack that was in the trunk of a car. The pack is an Army Combat Uniform (ACU)pattern. For those who don't know what that is, it is the camouflage of the United States Army. It had a patch on it that read "229 Training Brigade".

Inside this pack was a binder that contained photos, official documents, service awards, a letter from the President and a BRONZE STAR that was awarded to our victim on his last combat tour in Afghanistan.

Our society with its fixation on the physical focuses on direct violence and ignores the structural and cultural. Our leaders know that making changes on those levels would threaten their whole system. But as radicals we focus on the structural and cultural because we know that change has to begin at the roots.

The New York Times printed several articles delineating the cruel consequences of battle and the worst features of inadequate or dangerous medical care of Veterans of current and previous wars.

(LOS ANGELES) - When we start talking about ending war, one common reaction -- not as common as "You're a lunatic," but fairly common -- is to propose that if we want to get rid of war we'll have to get rid of something else first, or sometimes it's a series of something elses.

We'll have to get rid of bankers or bribery or the current structure of our government, or the corporate media monopoly. We'll have to get rid of racism or bigotry or extreme materialism. We'll have to abolish capitalism or environmental exploitation or religion or greed or resource shortages or sociopaths, and then we'll be able to move on to abolishing war.
