MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon battled back from a 2-1 deficit to post a stunning five-game upset of Western Washington on Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball action, 30-19, 28-30, 16-30, 30-27, 15-13. The win moved to Wolves to 2-0 in conference play and 5-4 overall. Western Washington dropped to 1-1 in the GNAC and to 5-4 on the year. The Wolves were led by Haley Kostrba's 22 kills and Kayla Mainer's 20. Stacey Bennett knocked down 15 and hit at a .464 clip. Mainer also had 29 digs and Claire Carpenter added 23 for the Wolves. Jessica Baty had 20 digs for the hosts and Lisa Martini had two solo blocks. Jaime Anderson led the Vikings with 17 kills, four solo blocks and six total blocks. Courtney Schneider had an astounding 40 digs in the contest. Western Oregon rolled to victory in game one (30-19), hitting .333 in the game. The Wolves never trailed, as Mainer had six of her kills in the game. The second contest went back and forth, before a pair of service aces by Angie Alvord ended the game at 30-28 for the Vikings. It was WWU's turn to cruise to victory in game three as the Vikings never trailed in running to a 30-16 win. In the fourth game, WOU never trailed and held WWU at arms length (30-27), setting up the final game. The visitors jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the finale, but WOU quickly came back (4-3) and the teams then traded blows until the Wolves took a 7-6 lead. They would never trail again, closing the match on a kill by Mainer (15-13). Western Oregon will hit the road this week for games at Montana State Billings on Thursday and Seattle University on Saturday.
