MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon used a balanced attack and a .308 hitting percentage to roll to a straight-games victory over Central Washington in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball opener for both teams. The Wolves rolled past the Wildcats 30-21, 30-28, 30-24 to move to 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in GNAC play. Central Washington, picked to finish third in the conference this season, fell to 1-9 overall and to 0-1 in the conference. WOU used 16 kills from Kayla Mainer to pace the offense, but the sophomore transfer from North Idaho JC had plenty of help. Stacey Bennett and Sharon Peterson added 12 kills each and Haley Kostrba knocked down 11. Bennett hit .529 on the night and Peterson converted .474 of her shots into kills. As a team, the Wolves hit .457 in the first game to set the tone for the evening. Mainer had 10 digs to lead WOU’s defense, while Amy Herron had three service aces and 47 assists. Kady Try and Erin Norris led the Wildcats with 13 kills each and Rachael Schurman chipped in 12. Norris also had four service aces. Western Oregon will next take on GNAC favorite Western Washington on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Building. Start time is 1 p.m.
