SALEM, Ore. - Senior Rachel Janny (F, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) was just trying to follow the game plan on Tuesday evening (Sept. 1) when the women’s soccer team took on Northwest Christian University. Janny was not trying to get her name in the record book, but that is what she did in the opening moments of Willamette's 3-0 win over the Beacons. “I was just following our game plan, making an outside run looking for a cross that was not on and decided to shoot for the cross bar with hopes of it going in or a deflection and rebound goal for someone else,” Janny recalled. “I could tell when I knocked it that it was going to drop. I just got lucky the 'keeper couldn’t get her hands on it.” Janny’s cross found the back of the net just seven seconds into the first game of the season. She now has her name in the record books for the second-fastest goal at the start of a game in NCAA DIII history. Sara Gross of St. Norbert College holds the record with a goal in six seconds in 2004. According to Janny, her speedy goal is a sign of things to come this season for the Bearcats. “Our attitude this season is to be relentless,” said Janny. “Knowing I scored the second-fastest goal in DIII history is just icing on the cake for a great season opener and a statement about our girls' attitude at the first whistle.” The Bearcats will look to keep their momentum rolling on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. (PDT) against Western Oregon University. The game will be played at Sparks Field.
