Sep-04-2009 12:59Blount's Punch is the Talk at UO and Boise StateTim King Salem-News.com SportsIn hot water, Blount offered an apology.
EUGENE, Ore. - The long anticipated game between No. 14 Boise State and No. 16 Oregon should have been a great season opener. But the game will most likely be remembered for a punch that landed on a member of the Boise State team, courtesy of a now highly apologetic LeGarrette Blount. It was during the closing moments that LeGarrette Blount became overwhelmed by anger and drove his fist at Boise State's Byron Hout. You could say that Hout started it, the initial contact came from him, but the real one two punch came from Blount, who later apologized. Boise, Idaho officials say they do not see it becoming a legal issue, even though Blount had to be restrained by police and staff from the team staff to keep from going after fans. The University of Oregon's President Richard Lariviere made this statement today, regarding player conduct following the Boise State football game Sept. 4, 2009. "At the conclusion of last night’s University of Oregon season opening football game against Boise State University, a UO player displayed inappropriate and unsportsmanlike behavior. There is no place on the field of play for that kind of action, and his conduct was reprehensible." "We do not and will not tolerate the actions that were taken by our player. Oregon’s loyal fans expect and deserve better. The University of Oregon Athletics Department is reviewing the situation and will take appropriate action, reflecting the seriousness of the player’s behavior." "We then hope to put this incident behind us and look forward to the rest of the season." "UO players, coaches and fans are known for their passion and enthusiasm for athletic competition. At the University of Oregon, we are committed to demonstrating that passion in positive ways," Lariviere said. Special thanks to Boise State, ESPN and GoDucks.com.
