CORVALLIS, Ore. - Former Oregon State University quarterback Matt Moore was claimed by the NFL’s Carolina Panthers after being waived Saturday by the Dallas Cowboys.

Moore signed a free agent contract with Dallas after not being drafted following his senior season.

The 6-3 native of Valencia, Calif., was 21 of 29 for 182 yards and one touchdown during the preseason for Dallas.

Moore is on the active 53-man roster for the Panthers and is on the depth chart behind nine-year veteran starter Jake Delhomme and recent free agent signee and a six-year NFL veteran David Carr, formerly the starter for the Houston Texans.

In two seasons for the Beavers, Moore passed for 5,733 yards and 29 touchdowns.

He led the Beavers to its second most successful season last year guiding the team to 10 wins and the Sun Bowl title.

Two of Moore’s teammates from 2006 also have made the active rosters of NFL teams.

Sabby Piscitelli, a second round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is listed as the top backup at strong safety for the team.

Sixth round pick Adam Koets of the New York Giants has made the club as an offensive tackle.

The Panthers open the season Sept. 9 against former Beaver and NFL All-Pro running back Steven Jackson when they play at the St. Louis Rams.

The Buccaneers open the same day at Qwest Field against the Seattle Seahawks and the Giants play the night game at Dallas.
