MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon's Kayla Mainer had 21 kills and 19 digs, helping her team to a 3-1 victory over Saint Martin's on Saturday night at the Physical Education Building.

The victory allowed the Wolves to maintain at least a tie for the top spot in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

WOU is now 6-1 in league play, and 9-5 overall. Saint Martin's fell to 0-16 on the year and 0-7 in the GNAC with the 34-32, 30-12, 25-30, 30-21 loss.

Western Oregon dominated two of the games, but the first contest could have obviously gone either way and the third game was captured by the Saints.

In the first contest, the Saints had six game points but couldn't convert any of them, and Mainer finally finished off the visitors with back-to-back kills. She had nine of her 21 kills on the night in the first game.

WOU scored seven straight points to break a 4-4 tie in the second game, cruising to the victory.

In the third game, SMU broke a 24-24 tie and scored six of the next seven points to win, with four of those coming on WOU attack errors.

The Wolves fell behind 6-0 in the fourth game, but righted themselves and rallied back with five straight points of their own.

WOU eventually built a 10-point lead before settling for the nine-point final.

Haley Kostrbra add 11 kills and 16 digs to WOU's attack, while Claire Carpenter had 24 digs on the night.

Andrea Tarbet led SMU with 12 kills and Shealan Campisi had 21 digs for the Saints.

Western Oregon will wrap up the first half of the GNAC season next week in Alaska, taking on Anchorage and Fairbanks.
