Sep-30-2007 10:02Penalty Kick Lifts Corban Win Over Eastern OregonSalem-News.com SPORTSWith the win, Corban improves to 6-7-0 overall, 3-2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
LA GRANDE, Ore. - Sophomore Jessica Matthews scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick in the 19th minute, as Corban's women's soccer team defeated the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon, 1-0, on Saturday at University Field. In its final road game this season, Corban took advantage of Matthews' team-leading 8th goal of the season when she capitalized on the Warriors' easiest scoring opportunity. Taking advantage of Corban's second penalty kick attempt of the season, Matthews connected on the Warriors' sixth shot attempt of the opening 20 minutes for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. Clinging to its one-goal lead, Corban kept applying the pressure while still holding its defensive intensity. The Warriors out-shot Eastern Oregon by seven (16-9), including 5-3 in shots on goal. Senior Sara Laughlin led all players with four shots, while fellow senior Megan Waunch and freshman Katie Hanson each registered three shots. Junior goalkeeper Karyn Allen played all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Warriors and recorded three saves. Meanwhile, Eastern Oregon's net-minder Kristina Kennedy registered a game-high four saves but could not stop the one that handed Corban the victory. With the win, Corban improves to 6-7-0 overall, 3-2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Eastern Oregon falls to 3-6-0 overall, 2-4-0 in CCC action. The Warriors are next in action on Thursday, October 4th, when they host The Evergreen State College in Cascade Collegiate Conference play beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
