CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women’s soccer team scored a pair of first half goals as the Beavers went on to defeat Portland State, 2-1, in action at Lorenz Field on Friday night.

With the victory, Oregon State improved to 6-2-1 on the season while Portland State dropped to 4-5 with the loss.

“I was pleased with the way we were able to score a pair of quick goals,” head coach Steve Fennah said. “I thought we took our foot off the gas a little; but, it was nice to return home and get a solid win.”

The Beavers jumped on the board first with Melissa Peck’s second goal of the season in the 30th minute.

After Alison Vislay played a ball forward from midfield down the right side to Najma Homidi, the sophomore collected the pass and found Peck in the middle of the penalty area.

Streaking towards the goal, Peck delivered a one-timer past a diving Chris Lewis into the lower, right-hand corner of the net as the Beavers took a 1-0 lead on the sophomore’s fourth career goal.

Oregon State would add to the lead just moments later with the help of goalkeeper Ashley Wood’s first career point.

On a ball forward by Portland State, the sophomore goalkeeper cleared the ball downfield to Jodie Taylor.

The bouncing ball cleared the Viking defense as Taylor found herself one-on-one with the Portland State keeper.

With the keeper charging at her, the senior placed a perfect chip from 20-yards out over Lewis’ head and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute.

The goal was the 11th of the season for the Pac-10’s leading scorer and the 44th of her career.

The score would remain the same until the 63rd minute when Portland State broke through for its first goal of the match.

On a loose ball just outside the penalty area, the Vikings’ Tara Authier connected on a shot that deflected off a Beavers defender and past the outstretched arms of Wood to cut the lead in half.

Oregon State managed to control possession the rest of the way; however, as Portland State was unable to threaten again as the Beavers recorded the win while improving to 7-3-1 all-time against the Vikings.

Wood picked up the win in net for Oregon State, recording three saves in net while Lewis made four saves in net for the Vikings in the loss.

For the contest, Oregon State held a decided, 19-9 edge in shots as well as a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Taylor led the way with five shots on the night for the Beavers while Holly Benson recorded three shots in the victory.

Oregon State will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30, as the Beavers take on Idaho at noon at Paul Lorenz Field.
