Sep-29-2007 06:15Corban and Evergreen Tie in Double OTSalem-News.com SPORTSSophomore goalkeeper Aaron Franklin played the entire 110 minutes in between the pipes for Corban and recorded a game-high 10 saves.
SALEM, Ore. - Senior midfielder Caleb Louvier scored the Warriors' lone goal, but Corban's men's soccer team ended a double overtime contest with a 1-1 tie against the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College on Friday at Warrior Field to record their second tie in the past four games. In what was a very physical first half of play, Evergreen was called for a foul in the penalty box when the Geoducks' Joshua Hacker took down Louvier therefore awarding the Warriors a penalty kick just over eight minutes into the game. After waving off senior Andrew Brown, junior Fernando Karczeski stepped up and got Evergreen's keeper to guess wrong but pushed his shot just wide to the right. Less than 20 minutes later, Louvier put the Warriors on the board when he was the recipient of a misplayed clear by Evergreen's net-minder Matt Stalnik. Stalnik attempted to clear the ball away from the charging Louvier, but instead ricocheted his attempt off the back of Louvier. Wasting no time, Louvier gathered the ball and knocked home his team-leading 5th goal of the season and gave Corban the lead just over 25 minutes into the game. After keeping the Geoducks off the board for the opening 60-plus minutes of the contest, Evergreen knotted the game at 1-all when Cody Lofquist sent a perfectly placed corner kick onto the awaiting head of Stephen Laughlin. Laughlin sent the ball past the Warrior defense and into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Despite having the advantage in total shots through the game, Evergreen could not hold off an attacking Warrior team that had a prime opportunity in the second half to score another goal. With Louvier and fellow senior Joshua Crain attacking, the duo was able to squeeze a shot through a pair of Geoduck defenders and past Evergreen's keeper only to have Avery Lohoff clear the ball out of the net for the visitors just before it crossed the line therefore preserving the tie. With 30 seconds remaining in regulation, Evergreen also had its shot at ending the game when Hacker rocketed a shot off the left post and back in front of the goal. Fortunately for the Warriors, a defender was there to clear the ball away and keep the game knotted en route to forcing overtime. In the first overtime period, Louvier had a chance to end the game following a through ball from Crain but rifled his game-high fifth shot up over the goal to end the Warriors' threat in the first 10 minute extra frame. Corban freshman Travis Wells had another opportunity to end the game in the second overtime when he received a pass from junior Mark Schubert, beat his defender, and went one-on-one with Evergreen's Stalnik. With Stalnik charging off his line, Wells poked a shot that missed wide left and sealed the game's fate of ending in a tie. Sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Franklin played the entire 110 minutes in between the pipes for Corban and recorded a game-high 10 saves, while Evergreen's Stalnik registered five saves. Evergreen dominated the shot category, 26-16, while Corban was called for ten more fouls than its opponent (23-13). Despite the foul difference, Evergreen was whistled for three yellow cards, including one on the bench in the first overtime period. With the tie, Corban finds itself at 3-4-2 overall, 2-2-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Evergreen moves to 2-6-1 overall, 1-4-1 in CCC play. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, September 29th, when they continue Cascade Collegiate Conference play against the Eagles of Northwest University beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
