Sep-22-2007 16:03Unbeated Seattle Pacific Tops Wolves, 4-2Salem-News.com SPORTSWestern Oregon dropped to 0-7-2 on the year and 0-4 in conference play.
MONMOUTH, Ore. - Seattle Pacific scored just three minutes and 30 seconds into the contest, but still had to survive a pair of Western Oregon goals to claim a 4-2 women's soccer victory on Saturday afternoon at the WOU Soccer Field.
The victory allowed the Falcons, ranked No. 6 nationally and No. 1 in the west region, to remain unbeaten on the season at 10-0 and 4-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Western Oregon dropped to 0-7-2 on the year and 0-4 in conference play.
Despite the mismatch on paper between the undefeated Falcons and the winless Wolves, WOU kept the visitors on their toes, especially early in the match when the hosts tied the contest at 1-1. Western's two goals in the match more than doubled their entire output for the season, as the Wolves had scored just once in 2007 prior to today's action.
SPU's Sarah Martinez scored both of her team's goals in the first half, pacing the Falcons to a 2-1 lead at the break. Chelsie O'Neill had scored for WOU in the first half, the Wolves first goal in conference play this year.
Jocelyn Charette seemingly put the game on ice just three minutes into the second half for the Falcons, but WOU made it interesting with just six minutes left when Kristen Werhane scored on Cori Young's second assist of the day to make it 3-2. But Martinez struck again with just over two minutes left, giving her the three-goal hat trick on the day.
Seattle Pacific out-shot the Wolves 26-6, including 11-3 in shots on goal.
Western Oregon will step outside of conference play this coming Tuesday (Sept. 25) when they take on Corban College (at Willamette U, 7 p.m.), and they will then host Western Washington on Friday (Oct. 28) at 3 p.m.).
