Sep-22-2007 15:01Western Oregon Men and Women Win SMU InviteSalem-News.com SPORTSThe WOU women clipped the SPU B squad as well (35-51), with Tricia Morrison's second-place finish leading the way.
LACEY, Wash. - Western Oregon's men and women made it a team sweep at the Saint Martin's Invitational, taking team crowns on both sides on Saturday morning on the SMU campus in Lacey.
The WOU men topped Seattle Pacific and five other squads to win with 25 points, while the women also edged the second-place Falcons and a field of five with a 35-point total.
Nik Karr finished in second place overall for the men on the eight kilometer course behind SMU's John Riak. Riak won in 25:14, with Karr next in 25:44. The Wolves had five runners in the top ten to finish with 25 points, while SPU's B team was next with 69.
The WOU women clipped the SPU B squad as well (35-51), with Tricia Morrison's second-place finish leading the way. Morrison, a freshman from Hillsboro, had a time of 18:53 on the 5K course, behind the winner Lisa Anderberg of Seattle Pacific (18:39). Shirlon Moncrief crossed the line second for WOU and fifth overall in 19:09.
"We dominated the team scoring, but Seattle Pacific and Western Washington were not running at full strength," said WOU head coach Mike Johnson. "But I am pleased, especially with the women whom all improved their times in this race. They have run better in each race thus far this season.
"The men didn't have their best race, but were pretty solid among the top seven runners. The running conditions were not the greatest, but we did a nice job of competing through it. We continue to move forward, I am pleased with the results."
The Wolves will now take a one-week break from racing, and will next compete at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational on Oct. 6.
