CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Beavers showed sparks early but fell to No. 8 Washington in three games (23-30, 15-30, 20-30) on Saturday evening at Gill Coliseum. Oregon State suffered its first Pac-10 loss, now sitting at 1-1, 8-6 overall. Washington continues to be undefeated with a 13-0 record, 2-0 Pac-10. “We made too many mistakes on our side of the net,” Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We needed to make better passes, better blocks, better swings at the ball. We can’t selectively prepare when we want to. The last couple of we played teams we should had dominated, but we just didn’t do it, but we haven’t been focusing.” Sophomore Rachel Rourke paced Oregon State hitting .286 with 15 kills, while freshman Jill Sawatzky had 12. Six of Sawatzky’s kills came in game three. The Beavers capitalized on three service errors by the Huskies in game one on Oregon State’s first four points en route to building a four point lead at the 14-10 mark, forcing Washington to burn a timeout. Momentum shifted with the Huskies going on short runs to lead by seven eventually holding the margin at the end of the game. The two teams tied things up 11 times with four lead changes led by Sawatzky and Rourke’s four kills each. Junior Ashley Evans added nine digs of her overall 22 on the match. Washington was led by Stevie Mussie with 20 kills, while Christal Morrison added 13. Oregon State heads to the desert next week to continue conference play stopping in Tucson first at Arizona on Thursday. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
