Sep-22-2007 22:49Oregon State Men’s Soccer Blanks Loyola, 1-0Salem-News.com SPORTSJustin Woodard’s second career goal propels Beavers to win.
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Justin Woodard’s goal in the 38th minute was all the Oregon State men’s soccer team would need as the Beavers stopped Loyola (Md), 1-0, in the finale of the OSU Zaher/Hensor Memorial Tournament on Saturday. With the win, Oregon State improved to 3-5 on the season while the loss dropped Loyola (Md), which was receiving votes in the national polls, to 6-2 on the year. “The team worked hard and stayed with the game plan so it paid off with a victory,” head coach Dana Taylor said. “They threw everybody at us in the end and we did a good job of withstanding their pressure and coming away with a victory.” With Oregon State controlling most of the possession at the start of the game, the Beavers finally broke through for the only goal of the match in the 38th minute. On a pass from Nick Webb, Josh Cameron found a streaking Woodward inside the penalty area as the sophomore headed the ball into the back of the net to give Oregon State the early lead. The Beavers would hold the advantage into halftime as a strong defensive performance in the second half would preserve the victory. Trailing by one goal late in the match, the Greyhounds mounted several late attacks; however, solid defense and the efforts of Oregon State goalkeeper Packy Deenihan would seal the victory. The junior goalkeeper made four saves on the evening, including a pair of diving stops in the second half, to record his second shutout of the season. For the contest, Oregon State outshot the Greyhounds, 11-8, while Loyola held a slight, 8-7, edge in corner kicks. Milos Kocic took the loss for Loyola (Md) after allowing one goal while making four saves in 90 minutes of work. With next weekend off, Oregon State will return to action on Friday, October 5, when it opens Pac-10 Conference play against Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., at 5:00 p.m.
