NEWBERG, Ore. - Led by Tyler Nelson’s subpar two-day score of 143, the Linfield College Wildcats cruised to a 32-stroke victory over runner-up Pacific University in the George Fox University Invitational men’s golf tournament held Saturday and Sunday here at the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course. The first day of play was halted by darkness with five of the eight groups still on the par 72, 6,646-yard course. Those groups were able to complete their first round early Sunday afternoon before the second round was played. Linfield shot a two-day score of 303-300=603, well ahead of Pacific’s 316-319=635. Willamette University took third with a 330-321=651, then came host George Fox with a 316-342=658, and Lewis & Clark College with a 367-380=747. Nelson carded a 72-71=143, one under par, to edge Max Bonk of Pacific, who had a 73-73=146, by three strokes for medalist honors. Alex Fitch of Linfield took third (75-72=147), Shane Adversalo of Willamette was fourth (79-75=154), and Tony Kordosky of Linfield was fifth (77-78=155). The leader for George Fox was Chris Lumsden with a 76-85=161, good for seventh place, while Mike Ulstad tied for eighth with a 76-86=162. Others in the Bruins’ top six for team scores were Kyle Wilson (81-86=167, 16th), Austin Rowland (83-86=169, 18th), Aleks Gabrio (90-85=175, 23rd), and Kelton Johnson (88-88=176, 24th T). Matthew Fanning (84-92=176, 24th T) and Dustin Churchill (93-101=194, 31st) were Bruins who competed as individuals. The next event for the Bruins, as well as several other Northwest Conference teams, is the Pacific Invitational Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 26-27, at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore. Tee times are at 12:00 noon on both days.
