Sep-20-2007 07:04No. 3 Portland Blanks Washington, 1-0Salem-News.com SPORTSSophomore forward Kendra Chandhoke nearly gave the early lead to Portland with a shot in the 19th minute.
SEATTLE - Freshman Elli Reed scored the game-winner in the 81st minute as the third-ranked Portland Pilots blanked the Washington Huskies 1-0 in a non-conference women’s soccer game Wednesday night at Husky Soccer Stadium. UP keeper Kelsey Davis made one save for Portland, which records its third straight shutout and improves to 6-1-0 on the season. After 80 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Pilots capitalized on their 20th shot of the night. Senior Angie Woznuk had possession in the final third and sent a through ball to Reed, just inside the 18-yard box. UW (2-5-0) keeper Taylor Carr came off her line to challenge Reed, who got off a shot before colliding with Carr. Reed’s shot found the back of the net, giving Portland the 1-nil advantage. It's the second goal of the season for Reed, who was replaced by freshman Sara Jackman following the play. Portland completely dominated time of possession and outshot the Huskies 22-4. UW managed only three shots in the first half and only one after the break. UP also held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. At one point during the second half, the Pilots had seven corners in five minutes. The first half mirrored the second half as the Pilots spent much of the time with possession on the UW side of the field. Sophomore forward Kendra Chandhoke nearly gave the early lead to Portland with a shot in the 19th minute. Chandhoke had possession in the box, made a move towards the middle of the field and ripped a left-footed shot towards the top, left corner of the goal. The attempt missed by a few inches. Portland had a scare with only minutes remaining in the first stanza when a UP defender tried to play the ball back to Davis. Washington’s Melissa Beal beat Davis to the ball and cracked a shot towards the goal from a tough angle, right of the post. The ball hit the outside of the net as the teams entered the break tied 0-0. Portland has not allowed a goal since a 1-0 loss to Purdue on Sept. 9. The Pilots next return home for a non-conference match against the Portland State Vikings on Sunday. UP and PSU are slated to start at 2:00 p.m. at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
