Sep-19-2009 22:23Beacons Fall to William JessupSalem-News.com SPORTSThe Beacons will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Portland to face Warner Pacific University at 4:00 pm. The game will be played at Gladstone High School.
EUGENE, Ore. - The Northwest Christian University women’s soccer team kept William Jessup scoreless for the first 72 minutes of the game, but the Warriors broke through with two goals in a four minute stretch, walking away from Mike Kelly Field on Saturday night with a 2-0 victory. The defense was in focus for both teams tonight as neither side was allowed many strong scoring opportunities during the scoreless first-half. But in the 72nd minute, a turnover was created by William Jessup in the midfield and after a quick pass, Jordan Kramer hit a perfect 30-yard bomb into the top right corner of the net for the eventual game winner. Jessup needed just four minutes to add an insurance goal. After a corner kick in the 76th minute, Kramer sent a cross into the box where Sandy Hanania was waiting, putting a head on the ball and into the net. “We probably outplayed them in a lot of aspects of the game for the first 70 minutes tonight,” said head coach Jonathan Rea. “But soccer is a fickle game and if you make one critical error it will cost you big.” The Beacons finished the night with six shots, including three on-goal. Calie McVicker had a strong night as the keeper despite the two goals, making five saves. Coach Rea was also boasting about the entire defensive effort tonight, especially the play of sophomore Brittany McKinley. “Brittany did a great job tonight using her foot skills in the back to get out of trouble, carry the ball to midfield and become a playmaker, and she was still able to get back in transition.” The Beacons will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Portland to face Warner Pacific University at 4:00 pm. The game will be played at Gladstone High School.
