CORVALLIS - The Denver women's golf team coasted to a 16-stroke victory at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational, hosted by Oregon State at Trysting Tree Golf Club, on Tuesday. The Pioneers’ Stephanie Sherlock claimed the individual title by two strokes. The Pioneers began the third round with a 10-stroke lead and shared the best final-round score (292) with second-place UC Davis. Denver finished with a 14-over 878 (291-295-292). The Pioneers were the only team to shoot three sub-300 rounds. Four of their five players finished in the top 15. UC Davis finished in second at 894 (300-302-292), followed by Long Beach State at 898 (290-306-302), host Oregon State at 899 (299-304-296) and UC Irvine at 902 (298-307-297). Sherlock shot an even-par 72 today to finish at a 2-under-par 214 (71-71-72). She finished two strokes ahead of UC Irvine’s Selanee’ Henderson, who ended with an even-par 216 (74-69-73). UC Davis’ Bryana Gregory was the only player to shoot less than 70 today, as her 4-under-par 68 helped move her into a tie for third place. Denver’s Katie Kempter, who finished in a tie for sixth place, had a hole-in-one on the 13th hole Tuesday. The Beavers were led by senior Jillian Ferrante, who tied for sixth (her career-best finish) with a 4-over 220 (72-75-73), and freshman Lauren Archer, who made her college golf debut and tied for 14th at 224 (78-73-73) while leading the tournament with 13 birdies. Oregon State claimed the first point of the 2006-07 Civil War series, presented by the Northwest Dodge Dealers, as the Beavers finished 17 strokes ahead of Oregon.
