Newberg, OR - WHAT’S BRUIN: Women’s Soccer News & Notes
Overall Record: 2-1-2 (Home 2-1-2, Road 0-0) NWC Record: 1-0, 1st T (Home 1-0, Road 0-0) Coming Up : Fri., Sept. 17, 5:00 pm - vs. Whitman College, Newberg, Ore. (NWC) Sun., Sept. 19, 12:00 pm - vs. Whitworth University, Newberg, Ore. (NWC) The Bruins’ season-opening seven-game home stand continues this weekend with a pair of Northwest Conference contests against the eastern Washington teams, Whitman and Whitworth. Live stats are expected to be available for the first time at George Fox soccer matches this weekend. In an unusual twist to the schedule, the Bruins will play conference soccer games on Friday and Sunday, with no matches on Saturday, for this weekend only. This came about because the Whits are also playing Pacific on this trip, but Lincoln Park Stadium in Forest Grove is shared by the Boxers’ football and soccer teams. Saturday is a home date for the football team, thus precluding any soccer matches that day. A 1-0 win over Pacific on Wednesday, only the Bruins’ second win in an NWC opener in the last ten years, has the team in an early tie for first place with Whitworth and Linfield. Kirsten Cardwell scored with an assist from Kassi Vanderkwaak in the first half, her second goal of the season and 24th of her career, and Becka Doyle made nine saves for her fifth career shutout, giving the Bruins a two-game winning steak. Tickets: Ticket prices for George Fox soccer matches at the Austin Sports Complex, which is located at the corner of Villa Rd. and Crestview Dr. a mile north of the main campus, are $6 for adults and $3 for non-GFU students and seniors 55 and over. Children 6 and under who are not in school are free. George Fox faculty, staff, and students are admitted free with valid GFU ID; the ID covers immediate family members for George Fox employees. BRUIN BITS --- * Montero Gets First-Week BAA, NWC Awards; Cardwell HM for NWC
With 110 shutout minutes in the Bruins’ first two games of the season, freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Montero of Hermosa Beach, Calif., earned both the Bruin Athletic Association Women’s Athlete of the Week and the Northwest Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week for the first week of the season, Aug. 30-Sept. 5. In the second week, Sept. 6-12, forward Kirsten Cardwell, a senior from Springfield, Ore., received honorable mention for NWC Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week. Montero played 45 minutes in the second half of the season opener vs. Northwest and made four saves, helping preserve a 0-0 tie against the Eagles on Sept. 2 (no overtimes were played). In a 0-0 double-overtime deadlock with Warner Pacific on Sept. 4, she played 65 minutes in the second half and both extra periods, making two saves. The awards might easily have been shared with starting keeper Becka Doyle, who went both first halves and also made six saves while allowing no goals in 90 minutes of action. Montero currently ranks 3rd in the NWC in save pct. (.867), 5th in goals against avg. (0.90), saves per game (4.33), and 8th in saves (13). She sent home the winner with a sliding foot-punch from five yards out following a cross from the end line by Cassady Gardner. Cardwell currently ranks 2nd in the NWC in game-winning goals (2, T), 4th in goals (2, T), 5th in points (5, T), 7th in goals per game (0.40, T), 9th in shots (11, T), points per game (0.80, T). * 2010 Honors Alyssa Montero --- - Bruin Athletic Association Women’s Athlete of the Week - (Aug. 30-Sept. 5) - Northwest Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week - (Aug. 30-Sept. 5)
