LOS ANGELES - Whitney Goodell’s first goal of the season, coming at the 74th minute, proved to be the game-winner as the Oregon State women’s soccer team defeated Michigan, 1-0, Friday at the LMU/Four Points Sheraton Culver City Classic.

Goodell’s shot, which was unassisted, found the top corner of the net off a left-footer.

To start the sequence, she found a loose ball 30 yards from the Wolverine goal, then swerved to get herself open and pushed the ball past the Michigan goalkeeper from 25 yards out.

It was her sixth career goal and sent the Beavers to their fourth victory this season.

After five games, Oregon State has outscored its opponents, 10-4, en route to a 4-1 overall record.

“Whitney had a very good goal,” Oregon State head coach Steve Fennah said. “But today was a team win. Both teams played very hard and had good opportunities. It was a great college match.”

Michigan (1-2-1) outshot the Beavers, 12-10, but could not get a shot past Oregon State goalkeeper Ashley Wood, who made four saves for her second shutout of the season.

The Oregon State defense remained strong throughout the game, keeping the Wolverines from getting a shot on net for the final 22 minutes.

Goodell and Jodie Taylor led the Beavers with four shots apiece.

Both sent two shots on goal, with Goodell’s second giving the Beavers the victory.

The Beavers continue play at the tournament Sunday when taking on Lamar at 11:00 a.m. PT.
