KIRKLAND, Wash. - Kirsten Cardwell scored two first-half goals, the first off a record-setting assist from Jenny McKinsey, as the George Fox University Bruins rallied from an early deficit for a 3-2 win, their third in a row, over the Northwest University Eagles in a non-conference women’s soccer match Saturday afternoon here at the NU Athletic Field. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game as Lizzie Perkins put one past George Fox starting goalkeeper Autumn Van Meter from the deep right corner. Cardwell countered with her first goal of the day at the 13:12 mark off the assist by McKinsey. It was the 19th of McKinsey’s three-year career at George Fox, breaking an 18-18 tie with Karli Holub (1998-2000).
Cardwell put the Bruins ahead for good with an unassisted goal, her fifth of the season, at 35:17. George Fox went up 3-1 at 56:51 in the second half as Esther Harder headed one past Northwest keeper Jessica Kane from four yards out for her second goal of the season following a cross from Kayla Corn.
The Eagles made a late push as Chelsi Pennington scored with a 35-yard kick on the left side that just grazed the outstretched fingertips of keeper Becka Doyle, making her first appearance of the season after recovering from shoulder surgery, at 88:04. Two more shots by the Eagles’ Stephanie Cummins and Abby Brauer could not find the net in the final two minutes as time expired.
Van Meter had one save and Doyle, who got the win, three for the Bruins. Northwest outshot George Fox 16-9, including 6-3 in shots on goal, and had six corner kicks to one for the Bruins.
George Fox (3-0) continues its trip the Puget Sound area with a Sunday match at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., at 4:00 p.m. Northwest (0-4-1) remains at home to host Bethany University of California on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
